Wallowa River - December 20th, 2011
supplied by: Joseph Fly Shoppe, LLC
RECORDED:
40 °
FISHING: Fair
12-20-11 The river has been fishable lately, but very little pressure. Ice a problem at times. Steelhead being caught from Rondowa to Minam to the upper canyon.
11-25-11 Upgrade from poor to fair based on recent reports.
11-23-11 Steelhead report for the Grand Ronde/Imnaha/Wallowa Rivers: Steelhead Flyfishing has been poor the past several weeks due to low water levels and temperatures. Fishing pressure is down and we are getting few reports in the shop. However, following snow last week we have had warmer temps the last few days and river flows have increased (Ronde up 140 cfs to 918, and Imnaha up 35 cfs to 184 and rising). This should put the fish on the bite, but we will see. Despite good numbers over the dams the steelhead season to date has only been fair at best. There will be some good fishing this winter and spring, but most fly guides and fly fishers have called it quits for the year. We will try to report on any improvements – until we close for the winter on 12/31.
11-8-11 Almost no one fishing upstream from Minam. One fisher reported catching two steelhead in four days of nymphing. Fishing downstream from Rondowa on the Ronde has been good, so a few fish will begin working there way into the Wallowa. However, evolution has decided it is not a good idea for all of the steelhead to go and park at their spawning ground over the winter. As steelhead get close to their spawning ground they slow down and stay scattered until the final push in February - April. Water temps are cold, high 30's, so get out the heavy sink tips or be prepared to nymph deep.
10-31-11 Nothing new to report as no one is fishing the Wallowa, I would think it would be worthwhile to cherry-pick the best steelhead holes in the lower river, in the canyon - there are a few steelhead around. We have no reports from fishers floating Minam to Troy - so please send a report if you have one.
10-12-11 We have had several reports of good trout fishing and know of two early steelhead being caught above Minam. There is virtually nobody fishing the Wallowa lately.
10-12-11 There is virtually no fishing pressure on the Wallowa so we are waiting for new reports.
10-2-11 Trout fishing remains good with dry flies. October Caddis are thick. A few steelhead ave been caught below Minam
9-4-11 Based on reports over Labor Day weekend we are moving the Wallowa River up a notch to Very Good. Trout are hitting both dries (orange stimulators/royal coachman/caddis/etc) and nymphs (the usual suspects).
9-3-11 We have reports of both good numbers and some big trout being caught on the Wallowa River, including a 22” fish that may have been an early steelhead. The river is still low and fairly warm so trout are in the faster water and deeper pools. Most trout are being caught on nymphs (stoneflies with a smaller dropper like a copper john), but hoppers are also producing. Try greasing up a muddler minnow and using it as a hopper, then swinging it like a minnow. We believe that the high river flows on the Wallowa earlier this year pushed more steelhead smolt down stream than normal, so don’t expect as many residual steelhead smolt (the Wallowa’s version of a stocked rainbow) as normal.
8-21-11: We seem to be in the August doldrums. The Wallowa River has continued to drop quickly as the hot weather has resulted in more water being used for irrigation. Water temps are still OK. Fishing has been slow most days, although the evening hatches have been thick and fishing fair to good after the shade is on the water. The best fishing is being had by fishers in cleated boots who wade the fast water to find the fish. Wallowa Lake is fishing poorly, their may have been a problem with the stocking program. I will contact ODFW on Monday to check. Imnaha River is fishing fair near town. Will update steelhead report shortly
8-6-11 The Wallowa River has dropped considerably, but is still difficult to wade - use studded boots. During the day it is difficult to find larger fish, but good numbers in the 10 inch range can be caught with #10 prince nymphs on the swing. After 7:30 PM the big boys come out to play. Last night a gentleman caught four fish in the 16 " + range on a bucktail coachman -- the same fly my dad used seventy years ago on the Wallowa.
7-27-11 Too high to wade, but fishing well from the bank. Try orange stimulators sizes 10 - 12, or large stonefly nymphs fished deep or with a copper john dropper.
7-20-11 The Wallowa has turned hot for nice rainbows. Water too high to wade but fish slicks from the bank with orange Kaufman stimulators sz 8 or 10. When you find where they are holding keep fishing the same spot until it stops producing. Expect a few large bows -- heavy 16+" - so use 4X tippet and respect the fish to fight you in the heavy current.
7-14-2011 Water has come down a bit, but is still high. No fear, there are fish to be found. I had good success witha squirrel nymph and small bh pheasant tail dropper the other day. Stimulators both small and large should ellicit some action in the evening as well. Winding Waters guide service had a good day on the river yesterday nymphing and we have had reports of large fish coming up to the surface for big stimulators and foamulators. Focus on the slick slower water, if you fish a section once without success switch up the flies because the fish are there!
7-9-2011 Stream flow is trending down ward and stoneflies are increasing. There are lots of big caddis flies out as well. Still have to keep fishing right along the banks, there are fish to be caught. Last time I was out I even saw a fish come out of that high water for dry. Bead head hares ears, princes, and squirrel nymphs are all working, as are blk woolly buggers, use a smaller dropper as well; I like bh soft hackles, and pheasant tails. Have some stone fly patterns on hand as well in case you see one rise.
Note: in this hot weather being extremely careful when releasing fish is important. Handing of the fish should be as minimal as possible and they should not be removed from the water. After a good fight you might need to hold them in the water for as long as 2-3 minutes before they are strong enough to swim away. As always we recommend using barbless hooks and a net to aid in the healthy release of fish.

FISHING: Great
The Wallowa River is fishing great right now. We had a big bump in flows last weekend that has subsided for now. The river blew out for a couple of days and is now on the mend. The holding water has reopened and slowed back down. The river is slightly off color but not enough to be a big deal. Water temps are holding right around 40 degrees.
That big flush of water really got the Steelhead moving up river out of the canyon and into the road accessible waters. Our guide Tom was out fishing yesterday and caught 3 steelhead in his first hour of fishing. Yahoo!
Tom is available this weekend for anyone who needs a little introduction to the Wallowa River and its' Steelhead.

FISHING: Great
The weather has been a little challenging lately but this has not kept anglers from having success catchingSteelhead on the Wallowa River. Tom fished the Wallowa River yesterday and found the river to still be running clear even with the warmer temperatures. That could change very soon as it is very warm up in Joseph and the snow seems to be melting at an alarming rate. Looks like the Grande Ronde gauge near Troy is on the rise. With weather looking like it will stay warm for the rest of the week we might be in for another blow out. Let's hope not. We will keep an eye on this and let you know what is going on. I just received the Creel Report http://www.scribd.com/doc/49881916/stscreel2011mar2for the past few weeks and things are looking good. 3.7 hours per fish on average of over 100 anglers interviewed. These are numbers that we like to see.

FISHING: Great
The Wallowa River has really shaped up and is fishing great right now. The water is flowing at very fishable levels and is clear and holding between 37 and 42 degrees. Our last 3 trips out we have caught Steelhead on the Fly. We have also been hearing reports of folks catching up to 8 Steelhead in a day.
I would say the Wallowa River Steelhead Fly Fishing Season is on. Should be great for the next 6 weeks.

FISHING: Fair
Fish were a little moody this weekend. We did have a beautiful day on Saturday but there was a huge Low pressure moving toward Joseph, OR and which showed up on Sunday. Tom and Jake fished for about 6 hours on Saturday and only caught 1 fish. They did however catch a nice sunburn. They thought that the low pressure caused the Bite to turn off.On Sunday, the weather was totally unsettled and it finally let loose with rain Monday morning. It has been raining hard all morning in Joseph. I am expecting to see a little rise in the water flows along with a change in color on the Wallowa. This could certainly shut down the fishing for a day or two. This flush of fresh water could be a good thing, however. It might just get those steelhead to move up out of the lower canyon into the road accessible section of the Wallowa River. Tom or I will be back on the water tomorrow and I will let you know what we find.

FISHING: Good
I joined Tom and Jake for a few hours of steelheading on the Wallowa yesterday. They had reported catching 4 fish on Tuesday so I thought I better go check it out.Our concerns about the rapid snow melt blowing out the river have been unwarranted. The water didn't seem to have come up at all and the color was not off a bit. Still clear. All of that snow that has disappeared, from my yard, in the past 2 days must have just gone right in to the ground. Conditions are still looking good. We did take a water temp yesterday and found the water temp to read 50degrees. This was hard to believe so I am going to bring a 2nd thermometer to confirm temps today. I also wanted to report that we saw very little pressure yesterday and were able to get in all of the water that we wanted to.The fish that we are catching are very active. All of them are jumping and running up and down during the fight. I just got a new helmet cam today and plan on getting back down there to capture some footage. Looks like another short sleeve day in the canyon.Hope to see everyone on the last Steelhead train of the season. FISHING: Excellent
Sorry for the late report for last weekend.
The Fishing just keeps getting better and better on the Wallowa Steelhead Fishing Train. I also just got myself on the Creel Report Emailing list. Click on the link below to take a look at the report. The numbers are at levels never seen before Yahoo.
Tom said the conditions continue to remain consistent on the Wallowa. Clear water holding right around 37 degrees. Most fish are still being caught nymphing but Tom has also been trying his hand with the Spay Rod and has been catching his fair share on the Swing. Very exciting for this time of year on the Wallowa.

FISHING: Great
Another successful weekend on the Steelhead Train. Tom caught a beautiful Wild Hen on Saturday(photo on website). We hope this one is able to reproduce in great numbers. He caught her on the Prince nymph. He did however get the Spey Rod out for a bit of fun and ended up catching 2 nice Steelhead on a swinging Purple Spey Fly on Friday. This was very encouraging. On Friday there was a little bit of rain, in the morning which caused the water to go a little off colored but not enough to affect the fishing. Tom could still see his feet in about knee deep water so he was not concerned about the off color conditions. By Friday afternoon the water had cleared back up and the temp had increased to about 39 degrees from 37. That little flush of new water probably got those fish moving around. That may be why Tom was able to bring fish to the swinging fly in such cold water. Sunday brought some very warm air temps up in the Valley and a river of water was running down my driveway. I suspect this water is making it into the Wallowa today and coloring it up a bit. We are expecting more warm days this week so this should bring some of that warmer fresh smelling water down to the noses of the Steelhead. I would expect the fish to be on the move this week. The door to the Hatchery should be opened for business today, so we will begin getting reports from the hatchery on numbers of fish they are seeing along with the weekly creel report. Stay Tuned, and please comment to let me know what You are seeing out there.

FISHING: Great
The report is just in from the first weekend of the "Fishing Train". As you can see in the photo above the weather was just perfect(on WWRE website). It was a bit cold in the am but as soon as the sun got up it warmed up and the fishing turned on.There was a mix of Fly Fishermen and Gear fishermen on the Train this weekend. The Gear Guys certainly had better success than the Fly guys. Everyone caught fish, but the big news of the weekend was one guy fishing with a jig and a bobber caught 11 fish on Saturday and 17 fish on Sunday. His success was a result of a couple of things. First of all, he knew what he was doing and knew the water down there very well. The second thing was his ability to fish the deepest slowest water. He said that the fish he was catching were sitting right on the bottom of the slowest moving pools he could find. This is very difficult water for the Fly guys to fish. It is just a challenge to get your fly down deep enough. This is not to say that the Fly fishermen didn't catch any fish. They had good success nymphing. There was even a few fish on a swinging fly with a Spey Rod.Fun had by all. We expect the fishing to continue to heat up. The folks down there at the hatchery don't even have the door open yet. They plan on letting the fish in starting March 1st. That tells you that the bulk of the fish have will be here in March.

FISHING: Great
Sorry for the break in the reports. I have been lazy and only posting on my site. I will try to get back on the Fish Eye Soup Habit. Go to our site to view past reports and photos.
I had to go down and see what was going on down on the Wallowa for myself today. Wow what a spectacular day. Another one of those 55 degree sunburn days in February. Doesn't seem right but I am not complaining.
The water has cleared up a bit from yesterday. It is still a little off colored but has more of that nice green color than the brown color. Water temp was back to 37 degrees. Sun was high and bright. We decided to continue Nymphing as that is what has been working. The Wallowa is a tough river to swing due to it's size, especially right now. We tied on our #10 Prince Nymphs and got to work. Tom and I fished for about 3 hours between 10am and 1pm. There was a little more pressure on the river today. We had to go to Tom's favorite, avoid the crowd, holes that most folks unfamiliar with the river don't fish. Tom was being kind and putting me into the premier fishy zones. He still caught the first Steelhead after about an hour. After a quick break for a snack he directed us to his honey hole and forced me fish through first. I hooked and landed 2 beautiful Steelhead in about 20 minutes. Then after taking a breather and soaking it up I continued up the run and after about 10 casts hooked a third. I did loose this one but not without a good fight and a few jumps. I would call the fishing great on the Wallowa right now. Get out there and enjoy some of this incredible weather and get a Fish On. It might snow next week and we will have to go skiing.
