Big Wood River - June 21st, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Wood should begin to show its blue ribbon colors this coming week. The Green Drakes have been slightly active but this fair weather insect is going to enjoy the heat this week. Look for this hatch during the heat of the day. Noon until 4:30 p.m. is the normal hatch hours for this insect. Look for the same bug to be spinning over fast water in the early morning hours. In the right place, this spinner fall can provide some of the year's best Big Wood action. When the Drake isn't present, keep casting big Stimulator dry flies as fish seem to be very willing to come up, even through the fast water to get these mouthfuls. The little Yellow Sally should also become a player this week, try to imitate this little yellow stonefly with size 14 and 16 yellow stimulators. Many random hatches also show up on the Big Wood in June, so have plenty of Adam's patterns to match the unexpected mayfly.

Little Wood River - June 21st, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
The window to fish the Little Wood is coming to a close. There are a couple more weeks to fish before it gets too hot and the snakes come out. With any desert fishery, the low light times of day are the best time to fish. Fish the riffles with nymphs and/or salmon fly imitations. Fish the banks and deep water with a salmon fly imitation and move around to cover a lot of water.

Big Wood River - June 14th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Big Wood has really turned on the last couple days. Although water levels are high, (and expected to rise a bit more this week) and wading is tricky, the fish are hungry for big dries and large nymphs.
Big Wood River This week's weather will be warmer than last weeks, and we expect the Big Wood's waters to rise slightly this week. This should be the last of the runoff. Fishing will be as good as it gets on the Big Wood for the remaindered of June. Wading should definitely be taken seriously on the Wood right now - wade with caution and fish with a friend. Stonefly imitations are working best; size 8-12 Stimulators and size 10-12 rubber-legged Stonefly nymphs. Green Drakes will start to show, so be sure to have a selection of Green Drake dries, cripples and nymphs.

Big Wood River - June 12th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
Big Wood River The Wood has been on the rise and fishing is tricky right now; weighted nymphs and a few streamers will take fish. There is still some more upper elevation snow left; another good session of warm days and nights will see peak runoff. Once the river crests and subsides, fishing will be as good as it gets. We expect to see some Green Drakes beginning to show by the third week in June.
Synopsis The Brown Drakes made a strong showing last week and have dwindled since the weekend; however, expect some activity to continue on warm, calm nights. The Big Lost and its tributaries, The Big Wood, and Little Wood are fishable, but are still susceptible to runoff. Silver Creek is the best option in the valley with Baetis, PMD's and some Brown Drake activity keeping things interesting.
Warm Springs/Trail Creek These tight, willow choked streams are running high and difficult to access. Your efforts will be better spent on other waters; don't forget about Dollar Lake and Lake Creek Lake if you're looking for a few hours of fishing adventures with the kids.
Dollar/Penny and Lake Creek Lakes These waters have recently been stocked and are great destinations for beginners and kids. Try stripping nymphs and streamers through the water; prince nymphs, pheasant tails, and wooly buggers.
Conservation The Wood River Land Trust is a non profit organization committed to conserving and restoring the Sun Valley area’s open lands, wildlife habitat, and recreational accesses. Some of the Land Trust’s successes include preservation of several local fishing access points along the Big Wood River including the Boxcar Bend Preserve (mid-valley), Cedar Bend Preserve (Hailey) and the Howard Preserve (Bellevue). We invite you to visit their website - Wood River Land Trust to learn more about their local efforts and sign up for their newsletter.

FISHING: Fair
Little Wood The Little Wood is running high and at times off color. Take some large stonefly patterns as well as some weighted nymphs with you if you find yourself in an exploring mood. The waters above the Little Wood Reservoir are open, but remain vulnerable to runoff.

Little Wood River - May 27th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Synopsis We have a week to go before opening day and what little snow pack we have left seems to be intact following several weeks of cool temperatures. Temperatures will remain cool through the weekend with Saturday's highs topping out at 50 degrees; cloud cover will predominate with the chance of intermittent showers. This is perfect trouting weather; river clarity should remain good and cloud cover might bring out a few bugs.
Little Wood Open The Little Wood is seeing the first hatches of Californicus, the giant stonefly. These insects are huge and will draw great strikes on the right day. Water conditions can be fickle on the Little Wood this time of the year, but with limited clarity and flows within the river's banks, anglers can feel somewhat confident that a fish will see their big dry fly offerings. Stay on the move, cover a lot of water, and enjoy the unique desert scenery. After the opener, anglers can fish the Little Wood above the Little Wood Reservoir. Generally speaking, if the Big Wood looks fishable here in the valley, then chances are the Little Wood is experiencing the same conditions and is fishable.

Big Wood River Opens Saturday - May 29th The Wood should fish in a somewhat limiting fashion on the weekend. The only thing that could prevent this are some warm nights and very high daytime temperatures which aren't expected. The river may be high and slightly off-color on the lower reaches, but we can't imagine the Wood not being fishable in some respect on the opener. Fish with a friend for safety, and try throwing giant stonefly dries like Sofa Pillows, Orange Stimulators, Royal Stimulators and big Parachute Madame X's. On the off chance a hatch does develop on the Wood, be prepared with a few Green Drake patterns, as well as big Caddis patterns, Adams Parachutes and Golden Stone flies. If you want to nymph or throw droppers, try big Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs and beadhead Stonefly patterns.

Big Wood River - May 14th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
CLOSED Opening Day - May 29th
If the river doesn't look to muddy, and an angler doesn't mind doing some bush whacking, the opening weekend could provide some limited action. Try prospecting slow currents, side channels, and very gentle riffles with huge dry flies that will support big bead head droppers. A giant Orange Stimulator fished on 7 feet of 2X with a size 12 or bigger Bead Head Prince Nymph dropped 18 inches on 3X below it should produce strikes from any fish that may be in the feeding mood. Plan on hitting many access points, as slow enough current speeds will be hard to find the first week of the season. Also be careful of spawning fish that may be present in side channels. If you see a fish or two that appear dark (almost black) sitting on a very clean gravel bottom, then you have found spawners, please leave them alone. Definitely do not step on these gravels, as they may hold trout eggs, one bad step and several thousand Rainbows can be killed.
