Big Wood River - July 15th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Great
Synopsis Summer is in full swing and this week is our first dose of summer heat; daytime temperatures are expected to reach the mid 80's, but nighttimes will remain cool. Silver Creek is on the brink of unleashing its clouds of morning Tricos; The Big Wood continues to fish well with Stoneflies and Yellow Crane Flies; the Big Lost is still running high below the dam and the tributaries are hit and miss. You don't need to travel far to experience good fishing; however, you might want to go to the extra effort to walk further from the access points to enjoy a bit more elbow room.
Big Wood River The Wood is in excellent shape and fishing well. With our cool spring and prolonged runoff, Stoneflies got a late start this year and are still turning trout. Yellow Crane Flies are beginning to play a large roll on the Wood and some Trico hatches are beginning to appear down south. Don't be caught without a few hoppers in the fly box, especially during the warm, windy afternoons.
Wood River Land Trust Upper Big Wood River Fishery & Habitat Assessment: Compiling the Science to Protect This World Class Fishery The Wood River Land Trust is seeking to answer a few “big picture” questions about the Big Wood River’s fishery and habitat to help protect this cherished treasure for generations to come. The Fishery Assessment will determine why this fishery is so healthy compared to other watersheds with similar pressures, what impacts are affecting the river in a negative way, and what actions can be taken to assure the long term viability of the fishery.
No single effort has been conducted to compile the various studies that have been done. The Land Trust is taking on this role to build a clear understanding about the fishery and all its needs. Ultimately, this information will be used to obtain a solid understanding of how to most effectively protect and enhance the fishery and its habitat and to strategically implementing land and river protection and restoration activities.

Little Wood River - July 7th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
Little Wood No one has fished it to give a report. If you think things are to crowded, give this river a try, it can generally be very good this time of the year. Throw big attractor patterns. If you do well, don't tell anyone…

Big Wood River - July 7th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Wood has been decent depending on the area an angler chooses. The higher flows really set the fishing back on the upper reaches of the river north of Ketchum. The mid valley has been the best fishing by far, but also the busiest with angler numbers. The lower river through Hailey and Bellevue continues to produce smaller fish, but decent numbers. The Green Drake is still out, although the peak of the hatch activity has come and gone. There are still some hatches of this bug happening around 1:00 p.m. and some morning spinners as well. The big Stoneflies are starting to show in better numbers. This bug seems to be getting off to a late start this season so continue throwing big flies like Stimulators and Tarantulas. Caddis and smaller mayflies are hatching in good numbers, especially during the low light hours; look for fishing working in the more gentle currents. As the flows continue to drop this week the fishing should keep getting better and better. More and more anglers are starting to show up this week so everyone remember to be polite, ask before assuming, and enjoy a fantastic week on our local blue ribbon freestone fishery.

Big Wood River - July 1st, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Green Drakes are in full swing this week on the Big Wood. The coming week should also provide good action with this insect. The bulk of the activity has moved to mid-valley with Box Car Bend being the epicenter of the bug activity. By next week start tracking the Drake into the Ketchum area and even north toward Hulen Meadows. The caddis activity on the Wood has been absolutely phenomenal for anglers standing on the right stretch right at dark. The easiest way to fish the caddis is to swing flies and try to feel the strike in the falling light. With enough glare and if an angler faces the right direction Caddis imitations that are buoyant can be seen good enough to catch fish in calm slicks. Don't forget to get up early to catch the Green Drake spinner fall; this event is often over about the time anglers are getting on the water. Try to be fishing by 7:00 A.M. if you want to see this event. Look for the bugs to be spinning over fast water and watch for fish activity in the areas below these spots that look like fish holding spots. If you don't feel like matching the hatch, just walk a lot of water and fish big stimulators to soft pockets. This can provide plenty of action. Keep those little yellow stone fly patterns ready as this bug should begin showing in great numbers this week.

Little Wood River - June 30th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
Not many people are fishing the Little Wood, especially on the weekdays. If you truly want to fish alone, this is the place to go. Big salmon fly imitations will do the trick whether you're fishing above the dam or in the desert below the Silver Creek confluence. Smaller fish can be caught by matching the daily hatches of smaller mayflies.

Big Wood River - June 21st, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Wood should begin to show its blue ribbon colors this coming week. The Green Drakes have been slightly active but this fair weather insect is going to enjoy the heat this week. Look for this hatch during the heat of the day. Noon until 4:30 p.m. is the normal hatch hours for this insect. Look for the same bug to be spinning over fast water in the early morning hours. In the right place, this spinner fall can provide some of the year's best Big Wood action. When the Drake isn't present, keep casting big Stimulator dry flies as fish seem to be very willing to come up, even through the fast water to get these mouthfuls. The little Yellow Sally should also become a player this week, try to imitate this little yellow stonefly with size 14 and 16 yellow stimulators. Many random hatches also show up on the Big Wood in June, so have plenty of Adam's patterns to match the unexpected mayfly.

Little Wood River - June 21st, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
The window to fish the Little Wood is coming to a close. There are a couple more weeks to fish before it gets too hot and the snakes come out. With any desert fishery, the low light times of day are the best time to fish. Fish the riffles with nymphs and/or salmon fly imitations. Fish the banks and deep water with a salmon fly imitation and move around to cover a lot of water.

Big Wood River - June 14th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The Big Wood has really turned on the last couple days. Although water levels are high, (and expected to rise a bit more this week) and wading is tricky, the fish are hungry for big dries and large nymphs.
Big Wood River This week's weather will be warmer than last weeks, and we expect the Big Wood's waters to rise slightly this week. This should be the last of the runoff. Fishing will be as good as it gets on the Big Wood for the remaindered of June. Wading should definitely be taken seriously on the Wood right now - wade with caution and fish with a friend. Stonefly imitations are working best; size 8-12 Stimulators and size 10-12 rubber-legged Stonefly nymphs. Green Drakes will start to show, so be sure to have a selection of Green Drake dries, cripples and nymphs.

Big Wood River - June 12th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
Big Wood River The Wood has been on the rise and fishing is tricky right now; weighted nymphs and a few streamers will take fish. There is still some more upper elevation snow left; another good session of warm days and nights will see peak runoff. Once the river crests and subsides, fishing will be as good as it gets. We expect to see some Green Drakes beginning to show by the third week in June.
Synopsis The Brown Drakes made a strong showing last week and have dwindled since the weekend; however, expect some activity to continue on warm, calm nights. The Big Lost and its tributaries, The Big Wood, and Little Wood are fishable, but are still susceptible to runoff. Silver Creek is the best option in the valley with Baetis, PMD's and some Brown Drake activity keeping things interesting.
Warm Springs/Trail Creek These tight, willow choked streams are running high and difficult to access. Your efforts will be better spent on other waters; don't forget about Dollar Lake and Lake Creek Lake if you're looking for a few hours of fishing adventures with the kids.
Dollar/Penny and Lake Creek Lakes These waters have recently been stocked and are great destinations for beginners and kids. Try stripping nymphs and streamers through the water; prince nymphs, pheasant tails, and wooly buggers.
Conservation The Wood River Land Trust is a non profit organization committed to conserving and restoring the Sun Valley area’s open lands, wildlife habitat, and recreational accesses. Some of the Land Trust’s successes include preservation of several local fishing access points along the Big Wood River including the Boxcar Bend Preserve (mid-valley), Cedar Bend Preserve (Hailey) and the Howard Preserve (Bellevue). We invite you to visit their website - Wood River Land Trust to learn more about their local efforts and sign up for their newsletter.
