Big Wood River - August 17th, 2004
supplied by: Silver Creek Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The middle of August has arrived and the fishing remains fantastic on all of our area waters. The cooler summer temperatures continue this week with some afternoon storms rolling in. Plan to fish early to avoid thunder and lightning storms.

Big Wood River
The Wood is fishing well at its low summer flow. Fish are taking a variety of flies that are probably best matched with a full size run of Parachute Adams. Gulper Specials are also a nice substitute. Hoppers are becoming more effective on certain days and the nymphing can be too easy, as a variety of insects are in the water column this month. The best time of day to fish is whenever you can, just vary your tactics; look for rising fish in the morning and evening and plan on searching the water in the afternoon. The Trico is very active on the lower reaches of the Wood from Ketchum south, and ants and hoppers are the fly of choice on the northern reaches from Ketchum to the SNRA. Nymphs will pick up fish throughout the system, although this is primo dry fly season -- so take advantage of fish looking to the surface. Ants and Caddis are always in the fish's diet this time of year. Be ready for big occurrences of both insects…

Warm Springs/Trail Creek
A great time of year to fish Grasshopper flies on these smaller streams. Beginners still looking to throw big flies to greedy fish should take a hike up either of these little streams. Planted trout are the norm, but a few wild fish are in the systems as well. Please handle the wild ones gently. Hatchery fish are a great tool to practice release skills on, should you get into a pool full of these ravenous beasts.

Dollar/Penny and Lake Creek Lakes
A great place to go with the kids. Picnics, dogs, bobbers and worms are all one needs to make family adventures and memories for a lifetime. Very few children ever forget the first fish they catch. If you need any help with the fishing part of the day, just ask one of our fly shop employees to help you get set up for a day's outing. Don't forget the camera!

FISHING: Good
Heading into the second week of August daytime highs are expected to approach ninety degrees, although the last few mornings have been chilly starting out. This means the insect activity is holding off until temperatures near seventy degrees. Getting to the water at first light isn't too important when the mornings are cool. Watch the thermometer this week and if things warm quickly, start at dawn; otherwise get on the water around 8:00 or 8:30. Evening activity will go until dark, so start packing a sweatshirt along, even if it's hot when you get started.

Big Wood River
Low flows are becoming the norm on the Big Wood as we settle into our last official month of summer. The cold mornings will let the fish know that summer is waning and they need to put down some calories. Expect more aggressive fish the closer we get to September. Hoppers have been productive up and down the river. Fish them with a dropper in the afternoon when the other bugs have called it quits. There is a good chance you will run into Pink Alberts in the afternoon as this fair weather bug makes it's midday appearance on the river. Be sure to have a short winged emerger pattern if these start hatching. This insect emerges into a Dunn when still on the bottom of the river and swims to the surface as a fully formed adult. Standard nymphs are not a great imitation for this emerger, check out Rene Harrop's emerger patterns for this insect. Little yellow crane flies are still abundant and best imitated with small yellow stimulators. The Trico is still moving up river in the morning and provides good surface activity. The caddis activity in the evening continues to be one of the Big Wood highlights this summer. Try a tan body size 16 Elk Hair Caddis and fish until dark.

Big Wood River
Expect this week to be one of the best fishing weeks of the summer on the Wood, as long as the rains hold off. The fish in the Wood have been given a week of rest, the water has remained at a good flow and is getting cooled off with the showers. Trico spinner falls are happening on the lower half of the river. The yellow Crane fly is still out and about in the morning. A scattering of Stoneflies still have many fish keying on big dry flies, and hoppers are beginning to take fish as well. Rusty Spinners are the fly to fish over the morning and evening rises. This fly will imitate a plethora of spent winged mayflies, (dead bug) and there are numerous small hatches of random mayflies every day on the Wood this time of year. There is still some evening caddis activity, which tends to increase as August approaches. Before lunch and after dinner remain the best times to be on the water, but anglers that cover a lot of water in the afternoon will tempt plenty of fish to their flies. Get ready, it is almost flying ant season here.

FISHING: Good
It's become an anomaly on local waters, but intense thundershowers on Thursday evening caused the Big Wood to run milky brown on Friday (clearing by Saturday). Trail Creek Summit even witnessed a short stint of flash floods and mild mud & shale slides. The cooling thundershowers are welcomed after three consecutive summers of record breaking temperatures. Precipitation averages for the water season are holding strong at 79 % for the Wood River Valley. We're entering the third week of July with some of the greenest hills in a few years…enjoy.

Cool mornings, hot summer days, and periodic afternoon thundershowers…It's time for "Siesta Fishing!" Get ready to wake up early and stay up late for the best fishing on almost all of our rivers, and grab a nap when you can. If you're willing to put in the hours and put up with the afternoon heat, hopper patterns will come into play. For the most part, plan on getting your licks in before lunch and after dinner.

Big Wood River
Despite the periodic afternoon showers, the Wood is going into a low water stage quickly; typical in late July and August. The rain storms at night have blown the river out on occasion, but it revitalizes within 24-36 hours. If this continues to happen, find which tributary is dumping the silt and fish above or well below it's confluence with the Wood.

Plan on seeing some Trico activity in the mornings on the Wood. It is also time to start fishing Rusty Spinners in size 14 and 16 to the fish found rising in the early morning and late evening hours. Stoneflies and Caddis are still strong players on the river as are the yellow Crane Fly and large Baetis. Don't stop throwing these big dries, especially as fish begin to see grasshoppers and stoneflies on the same days. Fish early and late and spend the afternoon sitting neck deep in your favorite swimming hole. It may be the coolest place in the Valley.

Synopsis
Summer is in full swing and this week is our first dose of summer heat; daytime temperatures are expected to reach the mid 80's, but nighttimes will remain cool. Silver Creek is on the brink of unleashing its clouds of morning Tricos; The Big Wood continues to fish well with Stoneflies and Yellow Crane Flies; the Big Lost is still running high below the dam and the tributaries are hit and miss. You don't need to travel far to experience good fishing; however, you might want to go to the extra effort to walk further from the access points to enjoy a bit more elbow room.

Big Wood River
The Wood is in excellent shape and fishing well. With our cool spring and prolonged runoff, Stoneflies got a late start this year and are still turning trout. Yellow Crane Flies are beginning to play a large roll on the Wood and some Trico hatches are beginning to appear down south. Don't be caught without a few hoppers in the fly box, especially during the warm, windy afternoons.

Wood River Land Trust
Upper Big Wood River Fishery & Habitat Assessment:

Compiling the Science to Protect This World Class Fishery
The Wood River Land Trust is seeking to answer a few “big picture” questions about the Big Wood River’s fishery and habitat to help protect this cherished treasure for generations to come. The Fishery Assessment will determine why this fishery is so healthy compared to other watersheds with similar pressures, what impacts are affecting the river in a negative way, and what actions can be taken to assure the long term viability of the fishery.

No single effort has been conducted to compile the various studies that have been done. The Land Trust is taking on this role to build a clear understanding about the fishery and all its needs. Ultimately, this information will be used to obtain a solid understanding of how to most effectively protect and enhance the fishery and its habitat and to strategically implementing land and river protection and restoration activities.

Little Wood River - July 7th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Little Wood
No one has fished it to give a report. If you think things are to crowded, give this river a try, it can generally be very good this time of the year. Throw big attractor patterns. If you do well, don't tell anyone…

Big Wood River - July 7th, 2004

FISHING: Good
The Wood has been decent depending on the area an angler chooses. The higher flows really set the fishing back on the upper reaches of the river north of Ketchum. The mid valley has been the best fishing by far, but also the busiest with angler numbers. The lower river through Hailey and Bellevue continues to produce smaller fish, but decent numbers. The Green Drake is still out, although the peak of the hatch activity has come and gone. There are still some hatches of this bug happening around 1:00 p.m. and some morning spinners as well. The big Stoneflies are starting to show in better numbers. This bug seems to be getting off to a late start this season so continue throwing big flies like Stimulators and Tarantulas. Caddis and smaller mayflies are hatching in good numbers, especially during the low light hours; look for fishing working in the more gentle currents. As the flows continue to drop this week the fishing should keep getting better and better. More and more anglers are starting to show up this week so everyone remember to be polite, ask before assuming, and enjoy a fantastic week on our local blue ribbon freestone fishery.

FISHING: Good
The Green Drakes are in full swing this week on the Big Wood. The coming week should also provide good action with this insect. The bulk of the activity has moved to mid-valley with Box Car Bend being the epicenter of the bug activity. By next week start tracking the Drake into the Ketchum area and even north toward Hulen Meadows. The caddis activity on the Wood has been absolutely phenomenal for anglers standing on the right stretch right at dark. The easiest way to fish the caddis is to swing flies and try to feel the strike in the falling light. With enough glare and if an angler faces the right direction Caddis imitations that are buoyant can be seen good enough to catch fish in calm slicks. Don't forget to get up early to catch the Green Drake spinner fall; this event is often over about the time anglers are getting on the water. Try to be fishing by 7:00 A.M. if you want to see this event. Look for the bugs to be spinning over fast water and watch for fish activity in the areas below these spots that look like fish holding spots. If you don't feel like matching the hatch, just walk a lot of water and fish big stimulators to soft pockets. This can provide plenty of action. Keep those little yellow stone fly patterns ready as this bug should begin showing in great numbers this week.

Little Wood River - June 30th, 2004

FISHING: Good
Not many people are fishing the Little Wood, especially on the weekdays. If you truly want to fish alone, this is the place to go. Big salmon fly imitations will do the trick whether you're fishing above the dam or in the desert below the Silver Creek confluence. Smaller fish can be caught by matching the daily hatches of smaller mayflies.
