Yakima River - August 1st, 2010
supplied by: Puget Sound Fly Company, LLC
RECORDED:
72 °
FISHING: Poor
Section: South to East Cle Elum
7:00am to Noon
2 fish to hand, both under 12"
Flows are raging at this point and best to fish out of the high hot sun.... Dawn to 11am or 4pm-Dusk. Tough going today. We didn't see any bug activity today and aside from from the two fish that rose to our stimulator and hoppers. Really a tough going both from a fishing perspective and behind the oars. Keep an eye on the takeout at east Cle Elum, the channel that dumps in at the takeout ramp is REALLY flowing right now and making pulling out there tough and kinda sketchy.
Dave's Hopper (sz. 12), Tan/Yellow Stimulator (Size. 10), Tan Sculpzilla (sz.8), Flashback Stone (sz. 12), Copper John (Size 10).

FISHING: Fair
We fished the Lower Yak on Saturday (Snively to Hyde Rd). Plenty of smallies still in the system that are willing to bite, but the flows are slow and low right now. We turned and burned through the frog water and concentrated on structure and faster, more oxygenated water.
Brown, Yellow, White and Green Buggers (sz. 6-12), Top Water Popper (Green and Yellow).
16+ fish to hand... most in the 6"-12" range.

Yakima River - June 30th, 2010

RECORDED:

FISHING: Great
Overall really great fishing today. We fished Ringer to Umtanum today from 9:30am to 3:30pm. The river has come down a bit to 3200 cfs since the big push of water (4200 cfs @ Umtanum), but keep your eyes out for daily bursts and how they affect clarity. We had great visibility above Wilson Creek, but in common form Wilson was puking in some dark water which didn't clear up to afford good fishing again for a mile or so downstream.
Early with streamers, mid-morning nymphing and afternoon non-stop gut-busting dry fly fishing from Big Horn through the Rock Garden.
23 fish to the boat. Most under 11" with one at 15" (sculpzilla) and one at 16" (Cahill). Good day for a 3 wt.
Flies: Black Sculpzilla (size 8), BH Prince Nymph (size 16), Pats Stonefly, Light Cahill (size 16), Stimmie (various)

Yakima River - May 18th, 2010

FISHING: Fair
I fished both Saturday and Sunday with fair success. Saturday, I floated from Snively to Hyde; Sunday from Benton City to Horn Rapids. Snively to Hyde produced the best fishing on small Clouser style bugs in white/brown, white/olive, and white/chartreuse. The river is on the rise down here. It is just over 3000 cfs. and the water temperatures at Prosser are in the 63 degree range. I won't be fishing for a couple of days. I am getting ready to do a presentation for the Fidalgo Fly Fishers at Anacortes/Mount Vernon Thursday and will be on the road most of the day that day. After seeing that the Yakima is on the rise, I checked the Methow and found it to be at 10,000+ cfs. The white water folks will love that. They may have a short season this year.

Yakima River - May 5th, 2010

FISHING: Good
Lots of wind again yesterday, but I didn't let it stop me. And I am glad I didn't. The bass catchin' was the best it has been so far this spring. It looks as though they are moving into the shallows and chasing down critters. Everything was below the surface and they liked chartreuse. No big fish. They were all average and some smaller. The river was at about 2200 cfs. at Kiona yesterday and the water temperature was about 57 degrees. I am also seeing a fair number of smolt and the Gulls are showing up more and more. They are a sure sign of bait fish being present. The bassin' should get better and better. Now we need some sunshine and warmer weather with less wind.

Yakima River - April 20th, 2010

FISHING: Poor
With the end of the steelhead fishing on the Methow and Wenatchee rivers, I have moved my focus to the Lower Yakima River and Smallmouth Bass fishing. I have been on the Lower Yakima for the better part of a month now fishing most everyday, and I have to say that so far the catching has been poor. Kind of expected that though as May is normally when it really turns on. Looking forward to some very good bass fishing this year.
My friend Dick Sagara, TFO & Rainy's Fly Rep, was in the area this weekend. So we got to do a little bass fishing yesterday. Catching wasn't great but Dick managed to land a couple of average Yakima River bass before he had to leave in the afternoon. I got a chance to throw a couple of the new TFO rods, a 6 wt. Clouser series rod and 6wt. Axiom rod, they really handled the heavy tips and flies with ease. We also tried just about every bass pattern that Rainy's has and yes both fish were caught on a Rainy's fly. They have an excellent selection of Bass/Warmwater flies. The flow is on the rise at 2200 cfs and the water temperature is continuing to get better and better. Yesterday it was 59 degrees at Prosser, so you can expect it to be just a little warmer at West Richland. The air temp in Richland was 84 degrees when we hit the take-out. It is going to get better. The increase in flow is also going to move more smolt downstream meaning more bass on the prowl.

FISHING: Great
This Yakima river report is brought to you by the staff of Puget Sound Fly Company, with help from our customers. Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations.
The recent cloudy and cooler weather combined with the annual flow drop has combined to create some fantastic fishing.
For those of you who like to wade the river or float and wade, the river is prime again. Flows look like they are stabilizing at around 1,300-1,400 in the Canyon.
Summer Stones, followed by BWO's and Mahoganys and October Caddis.
Nymphs: Crystal PT, Silvey's October Caddis and Vinyl Lightning #18's
Streamer: Sculpzilla
FLOWS: Click here to get Real Time flows at Umtanum
Shuttle service is available from Red’s Flyshop.

Yakima River - June 18th, 2009
supplied by: Griff's Fly Fishing Adventures
RECORDED:
82 °
FISHING: Good
I fished the Upper Yakima from South Cle Elum to the Thorp Bridge. Despite the "Gale Force" winds in the afternoon, we had decent fishing. Nymphing with stoneflies and a San Juan Worm was the most effective technique we used, but we also turned several fish on big dries. The biggest fish of the day was on a nymph, and the only thing that would have been better is if we could have gotten a picture of him. The big rainbow broke off right at the boat, and lets just say he was big. The river was in great shape and the fishing should only get better.

Yakima River - June 14th, 2009
supplied by: Griff's Fly Fishing Adventures
RECORDED:

FISHING: Fair
All the area rivers are dropping nicely and the clarity is improving. I haven't been on the Yakima for awhile, but I am hearing some decent reports from down that way. The upper river is running at about 3000 to 3500 cfs and is starting to fish. I was in the Methow valley for 3 days last week. It is coming into shape with the flow at the Pateros monitoring station at about 4400 cfs. The section of river between Winthrop and Twisp is really starting to look good. Also, I talked with Rolfe at the Klickitat Trader after I saw that the flows down there were just over 2000 cfs. He told me that the Klickitat is fishable. In fact he was headed out to swing one of his chosen runs. I am ready to fish a river.

Yakima River - May 17th, 2009
supplied by: Griff's Fly Fishing Adventures
RECORDED:
83 °
FISHING: Poor
Clint and I fished the Yakima from Ringer to Red's yesterday. We started about 11am and took off at 5pm. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine and an afternoon temp of about 83 degrees. We even did the float wearing shorts and sandals. Lots of Caddis throughout the entire float but no fish eating on top. We tried both dries and nymphs. The nymphs were the most productive. Both the Pat's Stone and Pearl Lightening Bug were about equally effective. The rest of the story is that the river is off-color with about 1.5 ft. of visibility and in the mid 4000 cfs range. With each passing day, I get more excited about the opener on the Methow and Twisp Rivers on the first Saturday of June. By the way, this opening date is new this year. In past years these streams have opened on June 1, so don't head to the river on June 1. It could be a costly mistake. Always give WDFW regulations a second look, it could keep you from an embarrassing moment,
