Yakima River - May 10th, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Good
The Yakima is stabilizing for the time being as has become very fishable as of late. (Look for that to change when our next heat wave hits). Caddis are popping like crazy, so fishing all stages of the life cycle should produce fish. Fish the pupa patterns down deep during the day and X-caddis, Improved X-caddis and Kingrey's hi vis caddis during any hatch and rise activity. March Browns are still drawing fish, so be prepared for this mid day hatch as well. My single best pattern for nymphing the last two years in May has been a Morrish's Anatomay in Olive size 12 and 14 with a Speculator in Brown, size 6. Report submitted by Nathan Keen and Dave McCoy

Yakima River - April 2nd, 2006
supplied by: All About the Fly
FISHING: Fair
The Yakima is in good shape. The Teanaway has been adding a bit of color to the upper river. The water temps have been staying under the 45 degree mark, so the dry fly fishing hasn't caught on fire yet. Altough there has been some decent March Brown and BWO hatches, but are only out for short periods. Emerger patterns are good for those times. Adult Skwala stone patterns have also been getting some attention.

Yakima River - March 23rd, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
50 °
FISHING: Great
Ryan fished the Yakima today and did very well. The morning fished great with midges being the primary program in the slow, slack water. They were up on dries (Griffiths Gnats, Cluster Midge 12 to 16). He recommended taking a few moments to watch the water for risers as the riseforms were very discreet, but the fish were definitely there on the top. There was a sparse BWO hatch around midday, but not enough to really get the fish going. This can change, however, from day to day so be prepared with small BWO (baetis) patterns in sizes 18 to 22. Our baetis pullover is especially effective. Skwalas made an appearance in the afternoon and there were enough around to make surface action decent. Gould's Half down and Skwala Stimi's will produce. The water temp was 43 degrees with overcast to slightly clearing conditions and slight wind. Report submitted by Ryan Smith directly from the river

Yakima River - March 16th, 2006
supplied by: All About the Fly
FISHING: Good
As of right now, nymphing is still the method of choice. But the dry fly game is just around the corner. Be prepared with some adult Skwala's, Blue Wing Olives, and the March Brown's will become important soon also. The river is low in most places, but in good shape. The fishing has been average to good.

Sunday confirmed everything that we know about spring trout fishing: When warmer weather arrives, both the aquatic insects and trout become much more active.
We know of at least 5 different boatloads of anglers (including Clark and myself), who fished 3 different stretches of river. Streamer fishermen found willing fish with Beldars and Sculipin patterns. Nymphers did well with Hot Skwalas, Jelly Bean (Baetis) and Lightning Bugs. And Anglers patient enough to wait for the shadows to return in the evening hammered fish on Bullet Skwalas and Parachute B.W.O.’s.
Take your pick and enjoy!
NYMPHS: Hot Skwala, Jelly Bean,Vinyl Lightning #18, WD40 #18, Pheasant Tail #18… DRIES: Parachute Skwala, Parachute B.W.O. #18, Adams Parachute #18 STREAMERS: Olive Beldar, Baby Dad, Stalcup Sculpin FLOWS: Click here to get Real Time flows at Umtanum

Yakima River - March 8th, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
45 °
FISHING: Good
The Yakima is fishing in fits and starts right now. When the weather warms a bit, the Skwalas start to move and the fishing improves. When it cools off, the fishing cools a bit as well. Head to Yakima armed with the following: Skwala stone nymphs and dries Baetis nymphs and dries Copper john's in red Big Ugly streamers with nice movement. Beldar Bugger in Black/White (new for us this year) One customer reported that soft hackles were working very effectively on a steelhead type swing. Report submitted by Nathan Keen

FISHING: Great

Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations. Despite the cold temps, the Yakima has been fishing great lately. Just adjust your tempo to the slower pace of a winter fish. Dead drifted nymphs and slowly fished streamers are most effective when the water is cooler. Another proven tactic is to think small with nymphs at this time of the year, although Skwala Stones will become active as soon as temperatures rise. For those of you who want to target big fish. Big Sculpin patterns have been producing some real pigs.
NYMPHS: Vinyl Lightning #18, WD40 #18, Pheasant Tail #18… DRIES: Parachute B.W.O. #18, Adams Parachute #18 STREAMERS: Olive Beldar, Baby Dad, Stalcup Sculpin FLOWS: Click here to get Real Time flows at Umtanum

FISHING: Good

Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations. If you’re looking for a good bet this weekend consider the Yakima River Canyon. Water clarity is find and the river continues to offer some of the most consistent fishing in the state. The Blue Wings are still hatching in the middle of the day and Nymphing in the mornings (before the hatch) has been productive.
For those of you who want to target big fish. Sheila and Stalcup Sculpin have been producing some real pigs.

Yakima River - October 19th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
60 °
FISHING: Great
The Yakima is low and clear and it has cooled down considerably east of the mountains. This means one thing, baetis and October caddis and possibly some mahoganies. The Baetis so far have been very small and size 20 and 22 emerger patterns are necessary to consistently hook fish. The evenings bring on flights of October Caddis and a bushy dry like a deer hair October Caddis will draw strikes from fish in tight to the banks and those that are feeding in streamy riffles and pocket water. As the water cools even more, look for the fish to start moving into slower lies as their metabolism slows. Nymphing has been good. I would fish an October Caddis Pupa or a Simulator with a small baetis nymph off the point. Look for feeding activity to begin at a more civilized hour (10am-11am) in the morning.
