Yakima River - September 19th, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Great
The Yakima has dropped into great wading shape and the fishing is improving by the day.
Look for baetis (if the weather is overcast and cool) and October Caddis on any day (and especially in the evening). If the weather warms consider fishing an ant pattern as these terrestrials linger into autumn longer than any other.
I would be fishing a large October caddis pupa with a dropper like a Morrish Olive Anatomay (size 18) or a bead head olive hare's ear (size 18 as well) during non hatch times. As midday wears on into late afternoon, begin to ply the banks with a size 10 or 12 October Caddis adult. Cast to all the likely looking spots and if you are not getting strikes, keep moving. Once you fish some working fish, then slow down and fish more deliberately.
Fish small soft hackles (14 and 16) on a floating line and leader tapered to 4x during non hatch periods. Soft hackles "represent" just about any emerging insect and they do a good job when nothing else is working OR as a primary method of fishing. Cast straight across, dead drift for a while and then let the flies swing across current slowly, but seductively. Don't set on these fish or you'll break off lots of flies!

Jon, Bill and I fished the lower Yak on Sunday. In summary, the weather was perfect…the fishing wasn’t bad it just wasn’t as good as we thought it should be. With overcast skies, light wind and mild temperatures, we all kept expecting a great hatch of B.W.O.’s. A decent hatch did come off in around 1:00, but the fish just didn’t seem that interested. We managed some whitefish, a few decent trout (even a nice 17”) but it could have been so much better. Oh well, a few more weeks of this weather and the fish have to turn on.
Flies: Jelly Bean, Red Vinyl Lightning, WD-50.

We Fished the Yak yesterday with a few friends. Our boat floated from Rinehart to Ringer. A short float with the 4,000+ c.f.s. that we’ve been seeing, but we had to get home early, so a short float was exactly what we needed. We fished the usual suspects: Hoppers, Nymphs and Streamers, with Streamers producing both the biggest and most fish. With results like that it made the choice to fish Streamers fairly easy. While we didn’t land a ton of fish, we hooked a fair number and landed some nice rainbows with some scrappy (or a word that rhymes with that) Northern Pikeminnow thrown in too.
NYMPHS: Prince,Vinyl Lightning Bugs
DRIES: Parachute Hopper, Joe's Hopper
STREAMERS: Brown Beldar, Mini Sculpin

Yakima River - June 15th, 2006
supplied by: All About the Fly
FISHING: Poor
Well, its that time of the year for the Yak. Good one day - out the next. Best advise: Check the flows!! The Yak is running high and dirty. With the start of the irrigation season and the thunder storms the valley experienced early this week, the river won't be fishable for at least a couple of days. Good time to get some of those home projects done. Report (and honey-do reminder) provided by Yakima Guide, Bill Loder.

Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations. Windows of opportunity come and go on the Yakima. Right now milder temps and less rain have teamed up to create some good fishing above Wilson Creek. If you go, fish above the Creek and you will be rewarded with P.M.D. hatches and clear water.

Yakima River - May 25th, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Fair
The Yakima is at 4000cfs as of today and the wade fishing is non existent below the Teanaway and maybe possible in the upper river. Look for it to settle a bit more after last week's blow out before you boaters head over. For the waders in the bunch, you are probably looking at September before this river is user friendly again. The Cedar opens June 1 and will be a good bet for some nice trout. Report submitted by Nathan Keen and Dave McCoy

Yakima River - May 10th, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
65 °
FISHING: Good
The Yakima is stabilizing for the time being as has become very fishable as of late. (Look for that to change when our next heat wave hits). Caddis are popping like crazy, so fishing all stages of the life cycle should produce fish. Fish the pupa patterns down deep during the day and X-caddis, Improved X-caddis and Kingrey's hi vis caddis during any hatch and rise activity. March Browns are still drawing fish, so be prepared for this mid day hatch as well. My single best pattern for nymphing the last two years in May has been a Morrish's Anatomay in Olive size 12 and 14 with a Speculator in Brown, size 6. Report submitted by Nathan Keen and Dave McCoy

Yakima River - April 2nd, 2006
supplied by: All About the Fly
FISHING: Fair
The Yakima is in good shape. The Teanaway has been adding a bit of color to the upper river. The water temps have been staying under the 45 degree mark, so the dry fly fishing hasn't caught on fire yet. Altough there has been some decent March Brown and BWO hatches, but are only out for short periods. Emerger patterns are good for those times. Adult Skwala stone patterns have also been getting some attention.

Yakima River - March 23rd, 2006
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
50 °
FISHING: Great
Ryan fished the Yakima today and did very well. The morning fished great with midges being the primary program in the slow, slack water. They were up on dries (Griffiths Gnats, Cluster Midge 12 to 16). He recommended taking a few moments to watch the water for risers as the riseforms were very discreet, but the fish were definitely there on the top. There was a sparse BWO hatch around midday, but not enough to really get the fish going. This can change, however, from day to day so be prepared with small BWO (baetis) patterns in sizes 18 to 22. Our baetis pullover is especially effective. Skwalas made an appearance in the afternoon and there were enough around to make surface action decent. Gould's Half down and Skwala Stimi's will produce. The water temp was 43 degrees with overcast to slightly clearing conditions and slight wind. Report submitted by Ryan Smith directly from the river

Yakima River - March 16th, 2006
supplied by: All About the Fly
FISHING: Good
As of right now, nymphing is still the method of choice. But the dry fly game is just around the corner. Be prepared with some adult Skwala's, Blue Wing Olives, and the March Brown's will become important soon also. The river is low in most places, but in good shape. The fishing has been average to good.
