WARMER TEMPS = FISH!

Sunday confirmed everything that we know about spring trout fishing:  When warmer weather arrives, both the aquatic insects and trout become much more active.

We know of at least 5 different boatloads of anglers (including Clark and myself), who fished 3 different stretches of river.  Streamer fishermen found willing fish with Beldars and Sculipin patterns.  Nymphers did well with Hot Skwalas, Jelly Bean (Baetis) and Lightning Bugs.  And Anglers patient enough to wait for the shadows to return in the evening hammered fish on Bullet Skwalas and Parachute B.W.O.’s.

Take your pick and enjoy!

NYMPHS:  Hot Skwala, Jelly Bean,Vinyl Lightning #18, WD40 #18, Pheasant Tail #18…
DRIES:  Parachute Skwala, Parachute B.W.O. #18, Adams Parachute #18
STREAMERS:  Olive Beldar, Baby Dad, Stalcup Sculpin

RECORDED:    45 °   FISHING: Good
The Yakima is fishing in fits and starts right now.  When the weather warms a bit, the Skwalas start to move and the fishing improves.  When it cools off, the fishing cools a bit as well.

Head to Yakima armed with the following:

Skwala stone nymphs and dries
Baetis nymphs and dries
Copper john's in red
Big Ugly streamers with nice movement.  Beldar Bugger in Black/White (new for us this year)

One customer reported that soft hackles were working very effectively on a steelhead type swing.

Despite the cold temps, the Yakima has been fishing great lately.  Just adjust your tempo to the slower pace of a winter fish.  Dead drifted nymphs and slowly fished streamers are most effective when the water is cooler.  Another proven tactic is to think small with nymphs at this time of the year, although Skwala Stones will become active as soon as temperatures rise.
For those of you who want to target big fish.  Big Sculpin patterns have been producing some real pigs.

If you’re looking for a good bet this weekend consider the Yakima River Canyon.  Water clarity is find and the river continues to offer some of the most consistent fishing in the state.  The Blue Wings are still hatching in the middle of the day and Nymphing in the mornings (before the hatch) has been productive.

For those of you who want to target big fish.  Sheila and Stalcup Sculpin have been producing some real pigs.

Yakima River - October 19th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    60 °   FISHING: Great
The Yakima is low and clear and it has cooled down considerably east of the mountains.  This means one thing, baetis and October caddis and possibly some mahoganies.

The Baetis so far have been very small and size 20 and 22 emerger patterns are necessary to consistently hook fish.  The evenings bring on flights of October Caddis and a bushy dry like a deer hair October Caddis will draw strikes from fish in tight to the banks and those that are feeding in streamy riffles and pocket water.

As the water cools even more, look for the fish to start moving into slower lies as their metabolism slows.

Nymphing has been good.  I would fish an October Caddis Pupa or a Simulator with a small baetis nymph off the point.  Look for feeding activity to begin at a more civilized hour (10am-11am) in the morning.

We had our annual Fall Yakima outing yesterday.  Our flotilla of pontoons and rafts descended on Ringer along with several guide boats.  Despite the number of fishermen, the ‘catching’ was great.  The weather was perfect (for the bugs).  B.W.O.’s were everywhere!  The fish willingly ate nymphs all morning and then came steadily to the surface for several hours in the afternoon.

RECORDED:    85 °   FISHING: Good
For those of you that have heard the saying "You should have been here last week".  Well, what else can I say, except, if you didn't get a chance to fish the Yakima river the last few weeks, you missed some great fishing.   The fishing is still good to average, depending on which section. Keep pounding the banks with Big dry's and your favorite dropper.  Nymphing during the hottest part of the day can be effective.   And don't forget your sunscreen.

Yakima River Report for July 14,  2005

The summer dry fly fishing over the past 5 days has been exceptional. Every day is different.... and we understand that "you should have been here yesterday" means nada,  however we predict some good-great dry fly fishing over the next few weeks.

The fishing yesterday was ROCKIN!  End of Story! If I quoted numbers you wouldn't believe it anyways.

Yakima River Report for July 7,  2005

The summer fishing rolls on here on the Yakima.  The Summer stonefly activity is in drive....not overdrive,  but most certainly drive.  The nymph activity is strong and the adult activity is average.   This particular emergence is most definitely the strongest and longest  of the Yakima's stonefly emergences-In essence,  the premier stonefly on the Yakima.   It also coincides with Hoppertunity and therefore can make for some decent to great big bug dry fly action.   As of yet,  the big dry fly game has been light.  Watch for that to change soon!

Currently the other types of aquatic insects include...summer Baetis,   various yellow mays #14-18,   and a variety of Caddis (predominantly Glossosoma and Hydropsyche  #14-18 Tan and Pale green), # 10 Crane flies (We have a great pattern in the shop for the Crane fly)

The terrestrial insects include...Grasshoppers, ants, beetles, snakes, lizards, groundhogs-just kidding on the last three.

Interesting summer time statistic- Percentage of terrestrial insect food versus aquatic insect food found in the stomachs of Rainbow/Cutthroat trout in two different stretch's of the Yakima.
Upper Canyon(Cle Elum to Thorp) -  Approximately 85% Terrestrial
Lower Canyon (Ringer road to Roza) -  Approximately 85% Aquatic.

Water temps remain good throughout the sytem!

The river is at full summer flow, but has stabilized over the last week. The fishing has been very good. Numbers are up, and the bigger fish are jumping on the big dry flys. It's a little early, but fishing with large Hopper pattern's have been working well. ( be sure to add your favorite dropper about 18"-36" under that. (Copper John, Lightning bug, etc.)
