Yakima River - March 15th, 2005
supplied by: All About the Fly
RECORDED:
0 °
FISHING: Fair
Without harping on and on about how low the river is right now, if wading is your game, now is the time to be over fishing the Yak. The Blue Wings and the March Browns are making a daily appearance. The fishing has been average to good. The weather has been great and looks like all next week will be even better with a few clouds showing up.
Fishing info provided by guide Bill Loder. You can book a guided trip with Bill through All About the Fly.

Yakima River - March 7th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
55 °
FISHING: Good
Where: Red’s to the Slab in the Canyon
Patterns fished: Beldar Bugger, Skwala nymphs, Skwala dries, red copper johns, Baetis paratrooper, baetis sparkle dun, spectre soft hackle.
Weather: Sunny and mild all day
Time: Fished from 10am-6:00pm
The fishing was great until the wind came up and BLEW all the bugs away. Even nymphing was tough as the downstream blow kept a belly in your line constantly and prevented drag free drifts.
A very nice baetis hatch started at about 11:45 or so and the fish were rising nicely to emergers and adults. The Trina paratrooper in size 18 produced a fish for my partner on his very first cast! I hooked and landed several fish on a baetis sprout emerger, before the wind shut the fish and us down for the better part of the day.
We rose a few fish to Skwala dries (Gould Half Down and the Hummer Skwala, both size 8) and I dredged a few up on Mercer's Skwala Nymph (8)and Natural Double Bead Stone (8). The fish seemed to key on the Skwala dries towards the late afternoon and evening.
My partner also hit a few fish on a Beldar Bugger in brown and orange.
Plan on having plenty of patterns for Skwala's and baetis. Stop by the store, we have many new dries and nymphs that will produce on the Yakima RIGHT NOW!

FISHING: Clark fished the Yakima on Thursday with decent results. Ed Day and Clark floated from Irene to Ringer and encountered good hatches of midges and Blue Winged Olives. With summer and fall water levels in question, take advantage of the spring weather and get out while you can.
Stay current with river flows listed below, but right now wading is superb with low water.
FLIES: Lightning Bug, Hot Skwala, Grifith’s Gnat, Iced Skwala, and 3D P.T.’s (pearl).

Yakima River - March 1st, 2005
supplied by: All About the Fly
RECORDED:
0 °
FISHING: Fair
Dry Fly fishing is just around the corner. The entire system is offering good wading conditions at this time and the river has actually been dropping slightly all week. The weather pattern this week will be favorable for Dry's. Good patterns to have would be Blue Wings, Skwala Stone and coming soon the March Browns. Fishing info provided by guide Bill Loder. You can book a guided trip with Bill through All About the Fly.

FISHING: Great

Despite the cold temps, the Yakima has been fishing great lately. Just adjust your tempo to the slower pace of a winter fish. Dead drifted nymphs and slowly fished streamers are most effective when the water is cooler. Another proven tactic is to think small with nymphs at this time of the year, although Skwala Stones will become active as soon as temperatures rise.
NYMPHS: Vinyl Lightning #18, WD40 #18, Pheasant Tail #18… STREAMERS: Olive Beldar, Baby Dads, and Sculpin DRIES: Parachute B.W.O. #18, Adams Parachute #18

Yakima River - February 7th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:
38 °
FISHING: Poor
Where: Red’s to the Slab in the Canyon
Patterns fished: Beldar Bugger, Skwala nymphs and red copper johns
Weather: Sunny and cold all day
Time: Fished from 10am-3:00pm
Dave McCoy and I fished the mid-day and did just ok on a mixture of streamers and nymphs. The water was 34 degrees so you can imagine that the fishing was a little on the tough side. I did get two nice fish on a skwala nymph and one average one on the Beldar Bugger (if you haven't tried these, you should. They sink great and have awesome action).
I suspect that a little warming trend will get the Skwala's moving and things will start to happen. We saw lots of midges, but the fish were definitely not up.

Yakima River - February 1st, 2005

FISHING: Good
We may be regretting the unseasonably warm weather later this year, but the Yakima river rainbows are taking full advantage and so should you. The ‘bugs’ and fish all seem to think it’s March already so why argue. Head over there armed with the usual Spring selection:
Nymphs: Pheasant Tails, Lightning Bugs, Skwala Stones, Copper John’s etc.
Streamers: Sheila Sculpin, Rag Sculpin, Muddlers, Buggers etc.
Current Flow are higher than normal and expect them to steadily drop. Check streamflow data below.

Yakima River - December 16th, 2004
supplied by: The Evening Hatch
RECORDED:
38 °
FISHING: Good
The fishing has been average to good. The midge fishing is pretty much non-existent currently most likely due to the river fluctuations we have recently experienced. Watch for the midging to pick up with consistent river flows.
The nymphing has been good! Utilizing the proverbial stone nymph and dropper is always a good bet. Have a variety of stone nymphs, especially Skwala like. Also carrying a variety (CJ's, PT's, RL Princes, Hare's Ears, Brassies, Lightning Bugs) of droppers in the #14-20 size range.
Streamer fishing either on the retrieve or classic swing style has been productive as well.
Bugs of the Winter
Dry Fly #18-22 H&L Variants, Royal Wulffs, Royal Parachutes #18-24 Midges- Para Midges, Hatching Midges Nymph suggestions #16-20 Bead head Copper Johns in Red, Black, Green and Brass
#16-22 Bead head Brassies in the aforementioned colors #16-20 Bead head and standard PT's, Princes, Hares Ears, Soft hackle PT's #18-22 WD's Streamers and Buggers
#4-10 Cone head or Bead head Rubber leg or standard Buggers in Black, Brown, Olive, White or combinations of, JJ's, Double Bunny's etc..... fish-on

Yakima River - November 15th, 2004

FISHING: Excellent
This Yakima river report is brought to you by the staff of Puget Sound Fly Company, with help from our customers. Please feel free to call us at (253) 839-4119 for further details or for help with pattern recommendations.
FISHING: We floated the river from Irene down to ringer the other day. Fishing was fantastic. Trout keyed in on very small (#20 or #22) tan nymphs. Glass bead emergers, Hares ears etc... Plenty of good wade fishing right now. Either plan a short float, with plenty of stops, or just drive to fish.
Get your last fix of trout fishing now! Yes, I know that this river fishes well in the winter and there is always Rocky Ford, but if you like to trout fish, get over hear now. The weather is looking good for the next week and the river is no longer crowded so this is one of the best fishing months of the year. Flows are much lower than you may be used to during the summer so adjust you techniques and approaches accordingly: Wading is great, look for new spots to access and don’t be afraid to fish some of the pockets mid-river.
FLIES: Nymphs: Mighty-Mite Baetis, Copper John's, October Caddis Pupae. Dry: Baetis Cripple, Baetis fold-over, Thorax B.W.O, Orange Stimulator, October Foam, Elk Hair Caddis Streamer: Cone-head buggers, Olive Zonker, Marabou Conehead muddler
