Yakima River - May 31st, 2005
supplied by: All About the Fly
RECORDED:    65 °   FISHING: Good
The Yakima is on the rise, and will be for the next few weeks. This is a good thing, as it will keep the water temps down, although the wading opportunities will get tougher and your best bet from now until mid-August will be from a boat or raft. For the dry fly-fisherman, the weather all this week looks great. Lots of overcast days with some sun peeking trough and some rain showers are reported. Nymphing has been good throughout the day. PMD's, Mahogany Dun's, Yellow Mayfly's should all fool a fish or two.

Yakima River - May 16th, 2005
supplied by: All About the Fly
RECORDED:    68 °   FISHING: Good
Best opportunities would be nymphing in the morning and casting drys and emerger patterns in the afternoon. No major hatches coming off, but afternoon offerings of Caddis, Stones, PMD's and a few lingering March browns. The river spiked a few days ago due to some heavy rain, but has returned to normal and is in good shape.

Yakima River - May 16th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    68 °   FISHING: Excellent
I fished the Yakima from Umtanum to the Slab with a friend and the fishing in general was very good the whole day.  The river has been up significantly from the the low, clear flows of winter and early spring, but it has stabilized and the fish have acclimated to the new levels.  Wilson Creek is putting out alot of color so the river has a fair amount of color right now, but this didn't make any difference to the fish.

We started and finished the day nymphing and the most effective flies were:

Speculator Brown #6
Anatomay Olive #14
Hot Wire Caddis Tan #16
Lightning Bug #16

I fished the Speculator as the main fly fly and would drop one of the others off the back by about 12" to 16".  I would say they took the big Speculator about 1/3rd of the time with the rest of the fish coming off the dropper.

The fish were tucked up in all the riffles and water with a little bit of speed to it.  They were eating very aggressively and they fought well.

From 12:45pm until 3pm there was a major mayfly hatch of three different species.  PMD's and Baetis were present, as well as a slate gray mayfly of about a size 16 or so.  I haven't seen this bug before, but there were a ton of them.  The fish were on the PMD's and the slate grey may, so the following flies were effective:

PMD Sparkle Dun #16
Parachute Adams #16 or #18
Tilt Wing Dun PMD #16

An accurate drag free drift was required, but once we did this, we were generally in to fish.  At some point, the water was absolutely full of floating duns on the water.  It was very cool to experience!

The evening produced a little caddis activity and I caught a few fish on:

X-Caddis Tan #14
Kingrey's Hi Vis Caddis #16

There wasn't much of an evening rise, however, so I finished the day nymphing with the patterns listed at the beginning of this report.

Now is as good a time as any to hit the Yak.  Flows are good, the water has color and the fish are willing.

Clark, Ed and Jason floated from Irene to Ringer yesterday with decent results.  The river is dropping steadily, but still has some color to it.  A few Granom, some P.M.D.’s and the odd Salmonfly didn’t inspire the fish to look up very much, so most of the fish were take deep.

DRY FLIES:  Elk Hair Caddis, Para Caddis, P.M.D.

NYMPHS:  San Juan Worm, Vinyl Lightning, 3-D P.T., Olive Sparkle Pupa, Hare’s Ear,  Crawling Caddis Pupa

Yakima River - May 6th, 2005

RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Great
The spring caddis hatch (mother's day caddis) is in full force right now on the Yakima and the fishing has generally been very good.  We are also seeing decent numbers of PMD's and there are still a few March Brown's as well.  I would also be prepared with a few golden stones to boot!

I would fish the following nymphs if there are no risers:

Morrish's super pupa in amber 14, 16
Hot wire caddis in olive and amber 14, 16
Anatomay in olive 14 (This was awesome last year!)

I would also have these flies for fishing the surface:

PMD Sprout emerger 16, 18
Trina's para trooper PMD 16, 18
Silvey's edible emerger (caddis) in tan 14
X-caddis tan 14, 16
Kingery's caddis parachute 14, 16
Gould's half down golden stone 8

The water has come up just a bit (200cfs) at this writing, but that doesn't affect the wading angler.  Access is good and fish are spread out all over.

RECORDED:    68 °   FISHING: Great
The fishing is average to great, depending on which section of the river you chose to fish. Multiple hatches going on, be prepared with lots of different Caddis patterns, both adults and emergers. The March Browns, Pale Morning Duns, and the Blue wings are all making a daily appearances. Also -  expect to see some Salmon flies along the banks.

Clark and Chris walked in on the upper canyon yesterday.  ‘Mother’s Day Caddis’!  Clark said that they were so thick that he wore his hood up, just to prevent the little guys from flying into his ears!  The trout eagerly latched onto anything that resembled the caddis.  Without making this about numbers let’s just say that the fishing was great.

NYMPHS:  Vinyl Lightning, 3-D P.T., Olive Sparkle Pupa, Hare’s Ear,  Crawling Caddis Pupa

The Mother's Day Caddis Hatch is just around the corner. These caddisflies are know as the American Grannom or (Black Caddis) and can show in big numbers in the late afternoon and early evening hours. A good dry pattern to use is the Elk Hair Caddis in dark green and browns and the Goddard Caddis in size 10-16. Fishing info provided by guide Bill Loder

All About the Fly is pleased to be hosting a 'Fishing the Yakima' seminar from 10-2 with Bill on Saturday April 30.

Beginning in the late morning B.W.O.’s began popping and the fish responded immediately.  In the midst of this decent Blue Wing action, the March Browns began hatching sporadically.  The fish immediately keyed in on these larger Mayflies and ate anything that got near them and resembled a March Brown.  As if that wasn’t enough, further downstream we began to see a few Granom (Mother’s Day Caddis) hatching as well.  Assuming that these were a few early individuals, we didn’t switch to Caddis until the fish were completely fixated on them.  With some showers and cloud cover the Granom came off in droves and the trout came up in equal numbers.

Any one of these hatches would have been enough to make for a decent day, but all three was a rare treat.

Yakima River - April 10th, 2005
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    50 °   FISHING: Good
I fished the Yak around Cle Elum for a bit both during and after my Trout Rivers, Trout Tactics class.  There was a heavy March Brown hatch of fairly short duration, but the fish were decidedly on them.  I managed to hook a few on a March Brown Sparkle Dun.

I also fished in the evening and the fishing proved tough.  The fish were midging beneath the surface and I hooked a few fish nymphing with a large attractor and a small midge emerger/larva trailing behind.

If I were going to the Yak right now, I would be prepared for March Browns during the day and either midge or caddis in the evening.  It won't be long until the Mother's Day Caddis hatch occurs and then you'll want to be ready with plenty of caddis.

Stop by the store and we'll show you all the new caddis patterns that we brought in for 2005.
