Yellowstone River - July 14th, 2011

RECORDED:    85 °   FISHING: Poor
Dropping but not fishable.  For safety reasons and lack of clear water it will be another few weeks before we will even try.  When the flows get around 12k cfs you will find us on the mellow sections.

RECORDED:    80 °   FISHING: Good
Had a good day on the Yellowstone yesterday, thanks to Roger and Caron.  It was a nice father daughter day.

Nymphing was slow early, but picked up as the day went on.  We were most successful with a small brown stonefly immitation with a prince nymph trailing.

We didn't streamer fish for long, but weren't getting much action in the sunshine anyway.

Dry fly fishing was a lot of fun, and surprisingly productive with a beetle and a hopper.  Some Drakes were coming off, and a Parachute Adams would have worked, but we had good enough action to stick with what we were doing.  We caught quite a few mid-size and small fish, but mixed in some very nice ones, too.

Tight Lines,

Jeremy

The Yellowstone is green and clear once again after a couple of days of muddy water. Flows are currently 3,400 cfs in Livingston and 3,150 cfs at Corwin Springs with 2 – 3′ of visibility.

Hopper dropper rigs trailing King Princes, CDC Pheasant Tails and soft hackles are working very well as well as small Stimulators, X-Caddis, or Parachute Adams. With the cloud cover we’ve had the last couple of days it may be worth stripping streamers off heavy banks in hopes of finding Mr. Big.

RECORDED:    75 °   FISHING: Excellent
The Yellowstone fished very well for us this past week as the water conditions continued to improve. The river is currently flowing at 6,100 cfs in Livingston and 5,400 at Corwin Springs with a good 4 feet of visibility. The upper river seems to have the most consistent dry fly action, especially above Yankee Jim Canyon. Hot dries are: small Stimulators, Hair Winged Yellow Sally and the Sweetwater MacDougal.

The river east of town is also fishing very well with double nymph rigs and streamers. Rubberlegs, King Princes, CDC Pheasant Tails and soft hackles have been the ticket.

Hopper season is just around the corner so keep checking here or call us at 406.222.9393 for updated reports.

The Yellowstone fished very well this weekend from Gardiner down to Mallards Rest. We had some great dry fly fishing in the mornings fishing big Chubby Chernobyl’s with a size 12 tan Crystal Stimulator as a second dry.  While the Salmonflies have moved up above the canyon there are still good numbers of Golden Stones, Yellow Sallies and caddis in the Valley.

We also had a couple of great reports from the lower river near Big Timber. The lower river is primarily a nymph/streamer option at this point but that should change in the next week or so. Call for up to date reports 406.222.9393.

Yellowstone River - July 6th, 2010

RECORDED:    63 °   FISHING: Excellent
The Yellowstone has finally dropped below 9,000 cfs at Corwin and the trout have started keying in on adult Salmonflies. The river is in great shape and still dropping which should set us up for some great fishing this weekend. Even at the current flows the Yellowstone is still moving fast and should be floated with caution. The water between Emigrant and Mallards rest is the safest bet and has been fishing good this week with nymphs and streamers.

Yellowstone River - July 5th, 2010

RECORDED:    63 °   FISHING: Good
The Yellowstone River is finally starting to drop and green up a bit. It is currently flowing at 10,500 cfs in Livingston and 9,400 cfs at Corwin Springs. We had decent nymph and streamer fishing this weekend, with black Wooly Buggers, Big Nastys and King Princes. There are good numbers of Salmonflies and Golden Stoneflies in the valley though the fish don’t seem to be looking for the adults as of yet. The most consistent fishing was between Emigrant and Mallards Rest. Note that at theses flows the river is still moving very fast and should only be floated by expert oarsmen. As the river continues to drop we should see the fishing really turn on later this week. Call us at 406-222-9393 or visit Yellowstoneriverreport.com for a current report.

RECORDED:    52 °   FISHING: Excellent
It looks like we are finally in for some warmer weather with temps in the mid 60’s to low 70’s through the weekend. With that, we should get one last shot at the Mother’s Day Caddis hatch before run off begins.

We expect to see heavy hatches throughout the valley in the next few days with peak activity in the afternoon and early evening. Nymphing and streamer fishing should be good earlier in the day, then switch to dries once the bugs start to pop. Double dry rigs with patterns like the Sweetwater McDougal or Irresistible Elk Hair Caddis trailing a smaller imitation like the X2 Caddis or Everything Emerger work great once the fish are on the adults. Just before the hatch, a dropper such as the Translucent Pupa or the Pearl Soft Hackle is hard to beat. It should be a great weekend of fishing on the Yellowstone, so don’t miss out.

FISHING: Great
I floated the Yellowstone on Monday from Pine Creek to Carters Bridge. It fished really really well, we had alot of fish eat caddis and chubbies. Besides the wind gust that picked up, it was a perfect day. We had a cloud cover, . That was the first time I have fished it and it was a blast. Alot of fish on top with and a couple on streamers. So if I had a trip planned and the water is blown out I would consider floating that again.

The Yellowstone is at it's best. Guides claim it may be the best season we've had in 10 years! The flows are currently at 4,000 cfs with 4-5 ft of clarity. Hoppers continue to be the bug of choice though those willing to get up early have had some excellent streamer fishing.

SUGGESTED FLIES: Chubby Chernobyl, Foam Winged Hopper, Grand Hopper, Western Lady, Flat Head Cicada, Neversink Turde
