Skagit: 4,700 cfs. (@ Marblemount) Fishing was good to excellent depending on where and how you were fishing. I fished the surface, Mike fished both sinktips and surface. This is what Monty had to say about his Skagit experience. I have since learned you don't talk about new flies, just looking for trouble. Anyway, it was a really fun spring. Thanks to all who enjoyed it with us.

Skagit River - April 30th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Fair
We managed a few chrome bright steelhead amidst the crowds on the Skagit last weekend and even heard of a nice springer being caught by fellas. We've had a few of them climb on in April over the years and they really tear it up!
I cancelled my last trip of the spring this week due to the warm weather heating the Sauk up. After all the equipment is put away I'd say this spring was as good as any other spring we've had on the Skagit system. Considering that we had roughly half the water to fish that we normally do we did extremely well. I don't normally talk about numbers much on here, but I will say that we had several double digit days the last two months, one of which was a big day last week. Otherwise just good steady fishing for the last two months.
Alaska departure is just three weeks out and we've got lots of changes in the schedule for this next year. I'm still making plans for fall, but right now it looks like a mix of North Sound silvers, Olympic Peninsula Chinook, and Snake River steelhead. Next year is going to be as busy as ever!

Skagit: 4,390 cfs. (@ Marblemount) Waters are warming now into the upper 40's. Air clear above the Sauk, but down to 3 - 4 feet, below when it finally mixes. Good fishing from the Sauk Confluence to the Baker River for late returning steelhead. Dollies continue to steal the show.
Best to have a boat and cover some water. Both the Sauk & Skagit close on April 30.

Skagit River - April 22nd, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Good
Now that the high water has subsided things on the Skagit are getting back to normal. We got yet another shot of fresh fish on that high water, which made for excellent angling once again this week. As of today the lower Sauk has about 2 feet of visibility and the Skagit below the Sauk has between 3 and 4 feet of visibility...perfect conditions. We've taken fish this week on jigs, plugs, and the ol' standby pink worm. We've hit a couple fish on spoons, as well, but the fish this year don't seem to be holding up as well in the spoon water. As for jigs pink and white has been the producer and black has also caught fish.
Only three more trips for me on the Skagit and then it's break time before heading north to Craig. Looking forward to soaking herring in those productive waters again this summer.
Until next week...good fishing!

Skagit: 5,440 cfs. (@ Marblemount) Dams are releasing a bit more water now, due an awesome snow pack . River in the upper reaches is running clear and cold. Not many fish around Marblemount but a few are getting up. The Sauk is getting a good return of steelhead and the fishermen are focusing their attention below the Sauk confluence. I look for more good fishing as we get deeper in April. The lower visibility of the Rockport to Baker River keeps the steelhead within the flyflinging range. Pink & Chum fry are coming out. All salmonid smolts appear to be on the move. Very consistent steelhead fishing.

River Conditions: Skagit above the Sauk has unlimited visibility right now. Skagit below the Sauk down to Concrete has 1-2 feet of visibility at best. Fishing: Wild Steelhead fishing has been hit or miss depending on flows and clarity. The smolt migration is on,..along with the Dollie Varden feed fest & fishing for them.

Skagit River - April 11th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Good
The fishing has been downright decent on the Skagit system this past week and we've also had several of the big cruisers that keep things interesting. Pressure has been moderate on the weekends and to no surprise very low during the week. We even had 12 miles of river yesterday completely to ourselves, which hasn't happenened in quite some time. The Suiattle has been knocking the vis on the Sauk down to less than 2 feet the last few days, more like 18" of visibility. That color has been helping us on the Skagit, however, as vis down there seems to hover around 3 feet below the Mix Master, or the Mixer to you technical types.
With visibility down on the Skagit we've broken out the pink worms again. While plugging today Ray and Cheri saw a steelhead jumping in a back eddy of swirling water, just exactly where you wouldn't expect a steelie. And jumping...huh? We reel in the plugs and Ray fires a pink worm in the vicinity of Mr. Free Jumper and holy smokes if he doesn't hook that fish. I've seen it all now!
Until next week...good fishing!
