Skagit River - February 16th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Good
Things are finally starting to happen up here on the Skagit system, as we're starting to see the first of what appears to be a good return of wild fish. Fish are scattered from Lyman all the way up to the Sauk with no area holding fish better than another. With releases from the Baker Dam being unpredictable, at best, the river from Concrete up has been the most consistent stretch. I'm also hearing good things about the Sky's winter fish the last couple weeks. Hopefully we'll get some good spawning production out of those fish.
We nearly landed one trophy class fish this past week and I've heard of several others landed. Most of the fish we've been picking up, however, have been in the 6 to 12 lb class. Side drifting small egg clusters and pulling plugs have been the most effective techniques of late.
If and when we get blown off the local rivers I'll be heading over to set up the Snake River program for this coming fall. It's looking like the latter part of October/early November for bookings. If I haven't already spoken with you about this fishery, email or call me for details. The Snake has been producing unbelievable returns of hatchery steelhead in recent years.

River Conditions: Skagit above the Sauk has unlimited visibility right now. Skagit below the Sauk down to Concrete has 4-6 feet of visibility. Skagit below Concrete; Depends on dam releases from the Baker, usually pretty clear up till around 9:00AM. UP-RIVER RAMP UPDATE: Fabers Ferry Landing: It is pretty much a drift boat show here and a 4 wheel drive must right now; lots of silt built up at the bottom of the ramp that needs to be removed. Rockport Ramps: South Side is still un-usable. North Side ramp at Howard Miller Steelhead Park is usable and your best bet for a sled. Swift Creek Ramp: A drift boat only show here! Now a drop off into the river where a sled trailer would bottom out bad. Marblemount Ramp: Ramp is once again usable and by far the best up-river launch for a drift boat...Is launchable for smaller sleds but not really a larger sled friendly launch due to the shallowness of the water in front of the ramp.
Fishing: River has cleared up a bunch to produce some nice steelhead the past few days. Still a few Silvers aound from this years exceptionally good run along with quite a few Dollie Varden.

Skagit River - February 12th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Great
Waters on the Skagit are down and fishing great right now. The steelhead that the natives were hitting last week have moved up and things are looking great for the coming week. Middle river is a morning-only show, as the Baker Dam puts it out by around 10:00 a.m.. From Concrete on up, however, things are prime right now. Dolly's have spread throughout the river and steelhead are scattered from the Sauk on down.
Two major regulation changes coming our way this April. The Fish and Wildlife Commission put a two year moratorium on harvesting wild steelhead and after April 1 on it will be illegal to lift a salmon or steelhead from the water that isn't going to be harvested. You know how I stand on the first issue, the latter one has me more than a little concerned. We'll adapt like we always do, however. I'm already rigging my 55 gallon fish tank to be lifted out of the water with the fish inside.

Skagit River - February 6th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Fair
Just after last weeks report a belt of rain washed the North Sound rivers out and it wasn't until the middle of this week that most of them became fishable again. The only exception was the upper Skagit, which was in and fishable by Sunday afternoon. I'm guessing with the number of natives reported in the lower reaches of all our rivers last week that the high water would have brought some fish upriver.
With the high water I ended up cancelling last weekends trips and had another weekend to ski Baker and actually watch the Super Bowl. It was definitely one of my last weekends doing so-called "normal" activities. From here thru the end of April we'll be fully immersed in the pursuit of those wiley steelhead!
For those of you that didn't get into the clinic at H&H Anglers in Bellingham this weekend I'll see what I can do to put another one on, possibly in May and geared towards summer run steelhead. They had over 100 calls for 15 spots...outstanding! For those of you attending the Monroe Sportsmans Show I'll be in the Prince of Wales Sportfishing booth (523) showcasing our Craig, Alaska operation and then March 27th down at Salmon University talking river salmon techniques. If your in the neighborhood be sure to swing by and say hello.
Until next week...good fishing!

Skagit River - January 30th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Fair
For all the rain we've had this past week the North Sound rivers have held up surprisingly well. Snow levels have stayed down far enough to keep the high waters at bay. The middle Skagit came in briefly on Friday when they shut the Baker down and then by Saturday morning it was out again. Ramping rates at Newhalem Dam on the upper Skagit have had the flows swinging wildly on the upper river, changing as much as 3,000 cfs each day.
Native steelhead are starting to appear in numbers in the Skykomish and Skagit systems now. I've been hearing positive reports from the Sky and a source on the lower Skagit watched the Skagit Tribe make an impressive haul on Tuesday of this week. Tough to see that, but at least it means the fish are in. Plunkers have been scoring well this past week on the lower Skagit, as well.

Fishing: All from what I've heard now; (been away for two weeks) Hatchery Steelhead remains the same with fish coming through in spurts. A few Wild steelhead now showing as well and lots of big Dollie Varden around too.
