Skagit River - January 25th, 2004

7,000 cfs in the mornings, released waters climb to 10,000 cfs by the end of the day. Air temp 30's Water temp 43. Vis above Sauk. 6'. The Skagit is probably the only river I know, that improves in fishing as the water rises. Dollies are smaller now, many of the big ones have been killed in the winter kill fishery. Too many of these wild Char in the 15" - 19" range with hook scars. We need to better protect this fish. Dark and wiggleys are good flies. Our new surface skater is getting it done, but that is all I will say on that.
Hatchery steelhead, continue to come in spurts. Skagit winters are stunning with eagles and all. Lovely setting.

River Levels - click here
River Conditions: Skagit above the Sauk has unlimted visibility. Skagit below the Sauk down to Concrete has 4-6 feet of visibility. Skagit below Concrete has 2-4 feet of visibility due to the still colored flows coming out of the Baker. UP-RIVER RAMP UPDATE: Fabers Ferry Landing: It is pretty much a drift boat show here and a 4 wheel drive must right now; lots of silt built up at the bottom of the ramp that needs to be removed. Rockport Ramps: South Side is still un-usable. North Side ramp at Howard Miller Steelhead Park is usable and your best bet for a sled. Swift Creek Ramp: A drift boat only show here! Now a drop off into the river where a sled trailer would bottom out bad. Marblemount Ramp: Ramp is once again usable and by far the best up-river launch for a drift boat...Is launchable for smaller sleds but not really a larger sled friendly launch due to the shallowness of the water in front of the ramp.
Fishing: All from what I've heard now; (been away for two weeks) Hatchery Steelhead remains the same with fish coming through in spurts. A few Wild steelhead now showing as well and lots of big Dollie Varden around too.

Skagit River - January 21st, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Fair
No fishing for me this past week. Anything over 10,500 cfs on the upper river this time of year and I call it quits. Bob still made it out in the high water last week, however, and managed to hook into a couple of winter brats and a nice 14 pound wild fish. On or about January 20th is when we traditionally start hearing of the big nates being caught on the lower Skagit and not only have those rumors started but we've also seen a few on the upper river already.
The Baker is starting to green up, as well, which should bode well for the middle stretch of the Skagit as the natives start to roll in.
All my positive thinking doesn't seem to be doing the Sauk much good. The upper stretch is nearly 100% silted in, middle has minor hope for repair, and the lower is a nightmare. We're going to need more than a couple flushings to help the Sauk, I'm afraid.

Skagit River 12,400 cfs water temp. 43 degrees. Pardon the interruption. The river was already high early in the week, but these rains coupled with a rising snow level have knocked it right out. We fish the Skagit up to 10,000 cfs. After that, the pools go away. Our lovely Skagit hasn't recovered yet, but when it does, oh Baby! If this cold front settles in, we should be golden later in the week. Your traditional sinktip outfits and steelhead flies are all working.

The Skagit continues to click along as if nothing ever changes. Some of the pools, some of the bars have come or gone but all seems to be intact.
Sometimes we will fish the Marblemount area, sometimes from Rockport to the Baker River, but my favorite (when the Baker isn't puking) is from Birdsview to Lyman. (Many river changes here, in the lower river. The Lyman Bar is gone now, and might as well, as the landowner has recently decided, the flyfishers are the guys who are leaving the trash. Go figure that one.
We are just seeing a few wild Skagit steelhead appear, but the Dolly/Bull continues to steal the show. Almost every day we will see a fish in the mid 20 inches. Imagine what the fishing would be like if we discontinued the Dolly kill fishery on the Skagit drainage. World class.

Skagit River - January 15th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Fair
Still a scratch fishery on the upper Skagit for steelhead. We worked up a few steelies over the course of two trips last week, however. Working the oddball pockets and riffles has been paying off more than the old standby runs lately. Some of these unnoticed pockets have also harbored some huge dolly varden and we've had several in the 7 pound range. The dolly fishing should remain excellent from here thru spring. Drifting small egg clusters has been the ticket for the steelies, dolly varden, and even a few silvers.
The Sauk has come back up a little with the recent rains and we're hopeful that some of the sediment will wash out with the higher water. The whole river is an entirely new program and if you plan on floating it when it comes in, if it comes in, be sure to scout every braid. There's more than a couple dead end streets up there that can eat a boat.

Skagit: 9,000cfs Skagit has held itself pretty well.. Air temps 30-50 degrees, water temps. 43 degrees. Visibility good above the Sauk, and fishable below. Like greaseling surface feeding Dollies in the Chum Fry out-migration, much like stumbling on rising Humpy Salmon the surface flies in the fall, we are on our latest "Phenomena". I can't tell you about it yet, because a one-time experience, doesn't make it law yet, but if you know me, it must include fishing trout rods and floating lines. Keep you posted.

Skagit River - January 8th, 2004
supplied by: Pacific Northwest Sportfishing
FISHING: Good
Back to the North Sound, Bob tells me he had a few decent days on the upper Skagit just after New Years. He reports hitting a few hatchery steelhead up there along with a ton of dolly varden and, to our surprise, bright silvers. In the clear water the fish have been hanging out in some rather unusual places, so don't overlook something that you think looks fishy. As the chum eggs start to diminish in the river look for the dolly varden to really get agressive in the coming weeks. The Skagit's in all the way down to Concrete and the upper Sauk is fishable. Upper Sauk is seriously braided since the last high water and scouting is highly recommended before picking a channel.

I hate it when I am right. We never seem to have the same winters, twice in a row. I guess we were due for a big snow year. I am just not sure it is staying up in the mountains, where it belongs.
Fishing overview: Winter grip has locked the snows and rivers into moderate to extremely low conditions. Water is cold, roads are icy (as are the river rocks!), but rivers are fun to play when cabin fever hits.
Skagit: 4700 cfs > 6500 cfs Pretty good fishing. Air temps 20-30 degrees, water temps. 34-39 degrees. Visibility excellent above the Sauk, and fishable below. Winter steelhead continue to roll thru in spurts. "Here today, gone to Maui." Some monster Dollies. Bill Arthur released a couple Mike taped at 27".

Skagit River - December 28th, 2003
supplied by: Dickson Flyfishing Steelhead Guides
RECORDED:
37 °
FISHING: Good
water levels - click here The Skagit has fish. Water flows of course are regulated by money, I mean, the dam releases. The river has been very fishy for both winter hatchery steelhead, and the Dollies.
When I wrote about a buddy who witnessed the Dolly killing last week, I had several other guys wrote and told me the same thing. Maybe we just can't stand fish population prosperity. When did we come to the conclusion we had a better idea on running the resource than nature? Oh Well.
Winter continues to have her way. The rivers are up and then they are down. If you are like many. It is not a matter of going when the rivers are optimum. You go fishing when you can get away.
Fishing overview: Not so bad: Salmons are gone now. They are now replaced by some hatchery winter steelhead. Not large numbers, but enough to give you the excuse to be fishing, and fishing is better than not fishing. Even in the winter time.
