Skagit River - November 20th, 2004
supplied by: The Avid Angler
RECORDED:    48 °   FISHING: Good
Now that the chum are in, the dolly varden fishing is starting to pick up.  The Skagit and the Sauk have both been fishing, although the Sauk is still dirty from last year's flooding.

This time of year dollies will feed on egg patterns, any fleshy type flies, large white streamers and egg-sucking leeches.  I like to fish these flies on an aggressive steelhead swing (dead drift the egg patterns) with a six weight rod and a heavy sink tip of 15' or so.  For me, the tailouts of all the steelhead runs seem to produce the most fish.

Look for pods of salmon and fish below them, Alaska style, and you will find dollies.

Don't worry so much about the color of the Sauk.  Just make sure you are fishing big flies if the water is dirty.

Skagit River:
River Conditions:

Skagit above the Sauk has unlimited visibility and is running at normal flows once again.
Skagit below the Sauk down to Concrete has 3-5 feet of visibility right now.
Skagit below Cocnrete depends a lot on flows being released from the Baker and visibility is variable at 3-5 feet of visibility.
Fishing Report:
Silvers along with lots of Chum are in the system!!!Dollies are also making their way back into the Skagit mainstem after spawning and are very hungry and very aggressive!! Fishing has been a bit better on the lower river over the past week and is slowly improiving up-river in the Rockport area.
Hatchery Silvers have bombed through the system and are now holding up by the Cascade as they make their way into the Cascade in spurts...but, they are very tight lipped & very colored up now.
Vibrax Spinners, Dick Nites and plugs have been the ticket the past few days.

After spending the last 7 days having a blast chasing coastal salmon we returned to the Skagit River today to find it loaded with both silvers and chums. Jigs, spinners, and Wiggle Warts were the ticket today, with Wiggle Warts accounting for most of the fish we put in the boat. When they hit a Wiggle Wart there ain't no doubt what's going on out there!

We'll be on the Skagit until next Tuesday and then we're back out to the coast to help out a couple of the coastal guides with some overflow. Busy, busy, busy!

Until next week...good fishing!

North Sound streams heat up As we approach the first of November, Our weather patterns are as variable as the tides. We are now fishing in the upper North Fork Stilly, Sky & Skagit Rivers for steelhead. The Chum salmon are swimming past us all day. The fishing is both floating lines and sinktips, and we are catching just about everything. Way cool. Our top fly is our egg-n-shuck pattern. Dead drifted, no weight and no indicator. Dollies, SRC, and even a steelhead....if you can get it by the Chum. GRRRRR.

We are fishing down into the estuary as weather permits - fishing the tides, but the multiple species and nickel bright fish are worth it. Client fly, Mrs. Black, on our fluorocarbon leader, and floating lines was awesome. I always love the days when the boys are into fish so well, we have to apologize by saying," The fishing isn't always like this". Now that's a good day.

Anyway, there are tons of fish; the straits, along the beaches (try your Clousers), in the estuaries, and up the rivers.

The good news: As water reach oxygen saturation below 47 degrees, and Stilly temperatures are in the mid forties, I simply haven't seen a prespawning mortality, or even stressed fish to hand in any species, as some would propose. The commercials are gutting salmon for the eggs (no market for the carcass), all the while cumulative mortality impact of a river recreational fishery is almost nil, but watch those weather patterns. One day you are golden with great visibility, and the next you are washed out.
Better read your regs. on fish retention. Varies from stream to stream. If you have never fished tidal fish, do it now, it's awesome.

Skagit River - October 24th, 2004

RECORDED:    54 °   FISHING: Good
The Skagit River is only two hours North of Puget Sound Fly Company, yet somehow it feels like it is much farther away than that.  The river not only holds great numbers of Steelhead, Salmon and Char, but also the largest population of Bald Eagles in the lower 48.

FISHING:  Clark wade-fished the river today, results: 5 Bull Trout and 1 dark King.  The fishing is decent right now and will only be getting better as more Chum enter the system.   The river is closed to fishing for the Chum this year, but their spawning will attract Bulls into an egg eating frenzy.  The key to this fishery is to match the hatch by choosing the appropriate color and size of egg.  Remember that eggs that have been sitting in the water quickly fade from a bright orange and become less translucent as they take on a more ‘milky’ appearance.  Later in the year as the Chum begin to die, flesh flies will become the pattern of choice.

FLIES: Glo-Bugs, Beads, Flesh Flies

TECHNIQUES:  To effectively fish egg patterns, a strike indicator nymphing set-up is the most productive.  A long 6 weight is ideal for this.

The Skagit’s large size also lends itself nicely to two handed rods and traditional swinging techniques.  If you have a single handed rod choose water that you can effectively fish.  Access is good for both boat and wading anglers.

Back to the Skagit, the tribes got their quota on Wednesday of this week and supposedly pulled their nets out of the river. In short order we had a shot of large wild fish zip upriver and fishing has been decent from Lyman all the way up to Concrete. The Rockport area is just starting to see some new fish show up. In addition, we've also been hitting quite a few chums already. Both Dick Nites and Kwikfish have been taking the chums, which must be released. Rain in the forecast should draw a lot more chums and silvers into the river...at least that's what we're hoping for!!!

Skagit River:
River Conditions:

Skagit above the Sauk has 4-6 feet of visibility.
Skagit below the Sauk has 1-3 feet of visibility right now.
Skagit below Concrete; flow releases have been strong early AM from the Baker River in Concrete and it does color things up for a bit down river,..but releases have only been lasting a couple of hours. Lake is full from early Sept rains so flow releases should continue for quite a while.
Fishing Report:
Very few Fresh Silvers it seems are beginning to move through the system from Fridays rains.
Chum Salmon are also begining to show now in the System. I have personally boated a couple over the last week while fishing for Silvers and have heard of a few others being boated as well. Hatchery Silvers have bombed through the system and are now holding up by the Cascade as they make their way into the Cascade in spurts...but, they are very tight lipped.
