Fish of a Life-time: ¡Grande trucha marron! This means really big brown trout in Spanish. We need to make a few things clear. This is not a typical freshwater fish caught in Patagonia. Most browns this size are caught in the rivers of Tierra Del Fuego and are Sea Run Browns. It is a very special fish because I have never seen caught a brown like this in Patagonia. It is cool to know that fish of this size can still be taken if one is willing to invest the time. I have fished this river for the past 4 years and on this particular trip six of us had gone fishless for 3 days. On the fourth day the group was down to 4 and I hooked this fish. I describe this type of fishing as steelheading for brown trout. The gear, techniques, and time involved is very simular to what it takes to catch a steelhead on the fly. We figured we average a fish over 25 inches every 15 hours of fishing! |
