Madison River - July 3rd, 2009
supplied by: Tim Tollett's Frontier Anglers
RECORDED:
81 °
FISHING: Excellent
The famous Madison Salmonfly hatch is in full swing! My daughter, Tamara is working for Montna FW&P's this summer and mentioned that there is some great fishing just upstream from Ennis.
Best Flies: Don't forget to have a good supply of Joe Aanes' Mojo Salmon fly. It proved to be our #1 choice for the Big Hole this season. Along with Mojo's have some Bird Stones, Yug Bugs, Henry's Fork Salmonfly, and other rubber leg nymphs. Caddis patterns will also produce fish. And don't forget to pack a number of smaller Copper Johns (size 12-16) especially in lime and silver colors.

Missouri River - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Trout Shop
RECORDED:
72 °
FISHING: Excellent
Smile, The River will be in the Zone by Thursday.
Statement from the Bureau of Reclamation on June 30, 2009
It appears the high elevation snowmelt is essentially over, as inflows into Canyon Ferry have declined to near 8,000 cfs and continue to decline. To continue evacuating storage from the exclusive flood pool and provide relief to the high river flows in the Missouri River downstream of Canyon Ferry Dam, the following operation changes are required at Canyon Ferry Dam and Powerplant.
7,200 cfs - Here it comes! Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 1
The water line visible on the side of the river bank provides proof that the Bureau of Reclamation is sticking to their plan. Down goes the river. 9,000 cfs at 10:30 pm. Caddis have already noticeably reacted. Craig was fairly quiet at 9:00 pm. There must be something worth staying on the river for. It's here.
Caddis, PMD's, Yellow Sallies, and a few Brown Drakes are all in the mix. Get ready for the river to boil. Tricos are not far away. Set your nymph and streamer rods down and give your dry fly rod a work out.

Deschutes River - Lower - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop, Inc.
RECORDED:
92 °
FISHING: Good
Red Side Trout:
Summer is here and so are the Caddis. We also have good numbers of Pale Morning Duns, Pale Evening Duns, and the sometimes forgotten Little Yellow Mays. Fishing has become more challenging during certain times of the day, for the most part, mornings and evenings are the most productive times. General Trout Feeding Time Frames: Activity takes place from 9 AM until about 1 PM, then again from about 5 PM until dark. Quick Tip: This time of year can be a real hoot, fish a dry trailed by a wet fly emerger and hang on. Allow that set up to drift all the way past you down stream, and then let it hang below you for 20 to 30 seconds. Your not done yet, retrieve those bugs with a slow, fast, slow action to imitate a diving egg laying caddis. It is important to mix it up, so change your technique and you’ll be amazed the difference it will make. Now that water temperatures are in the upper 50’s, its a really good idea to fish water that is fast and well oxygenated. I mean don’t be afraid to fish water that looks too fast. remember each column of water depth will slow dramatically every foot or so the water deepens. Trout can lay very comfortably under water that looks really fast. Try it, you’ll like it. Current Hatches on the Deschutes River: MAY FLIES: BWO’s, Size 18, Little Yellow May’s size 16, PMD’s size 16, Pale Evening Duns; size 12. CADDIS: Igloo Case Building, Size 18 or 20. Taos Area Waters - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
85 °
FISHING: Excellent
It's all good now, with non-rain runoff finally over. The rain, however, might cause periodic muddy water, but that's what red San Juan worms are for. Otherwise, it's dapping or bow and arrow casts on the Chiquito, Hondo, Santa Barbara and the like. The Pueblo near the gorge might have some good fishing in the shady hours, but it will generally be too warm for midday fishing.

Conejos River - July 2nd, 2009
supplied by: The Reel Life
RECORDED:
86 °
FISHING: Good
It depends upon the time of day and the releases from Platoro. Good idea to be armed with your midsummer arsenal, including green drake patterns, which will increase in importance as the hatch time approaches. So golden stones, caddis in green and golden, red and brown worms, craneflies and streamers for the darker skies (most of the really big fish these days are taking advantage of these monsoon clouds to come out and kill stuff). Terrestrials too. One fly I can't keep enough of is the hard shelled ant. Drop that one behind your dry fly and see what happens.
