Deschutes River - Middle - September 7th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters
FISHING: Good
The middle river will fish better over the next couple of months. Stripping streamers is a great way to induce strikes from the larger brown trout here. These fish will stage for their fall spawn and tend to get a bit aggressive when baitfish patterns, like sculpins, are stripped by their noses..

Deschutes River - Middle - August 20th, 2010
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
82 °
FISHING: Fair
The water is pretty warm from Bend to Lake Billy Chinook. I don't like sending people here right now, but the good news is that we have some cooler nights plus a cool weekend instore so things might improve pretty fast.
If you are going, plan on Purple Haze, Renegades, PMD's, BWO's, some limited caddis hatches and small nymphs. Go in the evening or early morning for the best luck and take a water temperature with a thermometer. If it is over 67 don't fish.

FISHING: Good
The Middle D is a good bet early AM and evening, with spotty fishing in the afternoon.
Look for PMD's and a few BWO's, caddis and Rusty Spinners.
Nymphs are good during the day with the Beer Head Baetis and Soft Hackle PT being especially good.

supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:

FISHING: Fair
Just coming back from high water the last 6 days. PMD's, Pale Evening Duns and Caddis are on. Now would be a good time to chuck a big, hairy streamer for the big browns who will be out looking for food after the high water.

Deschutes River - Middle - March 10th, 2010
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
49 °
FISHING: Fair
The Water is still pretty high and will be until mid April, but if you poke around you'll find some good fishing from Bend down to Lake Billy Chinook.
March Browns, BWO, Skawla's and Midges are the most important hatches but look for small dark caddis to be hatching too and getting more prolific in the next month.
Nymphs and Streamers are great bets when the water is high.

Deschutes River - Middle - January 26th, 2010
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
RECORDED:
42 °
FISHING: Fair
This water is not completely out of the question IF you know where to go.
From Bend down to Lake Billy Chinook there are some good spots that fish OK in the winter even during high water.
Watch water levels, we should see a big drop for 3 or 4 days in the next 2 weeks as the irrigation companies open the ditches for a "stock run". Often, the February stock run is a good time to go hit the little black stone hatch.
Blue Wing Olives are sporadic, Midges are consistent. Whether the fish will come up to eat them off the surface depends on the day.
Nymphing with a big heavy stonefly and a mayfly or caddis larva dropper is recommended.
Streamer fishing is smart at this time of year.

Deschutes River - Middle - December 6th, 2009

FISHING: Fair
The "Middle D" is a nymph and streamer game from now until about February. The bigger Brown trout in this stretch of river can be very aggressive to a large streamer.
