Deschutes River - Upper - September 7th, 2010
supplied by: Fly and Field Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
The Upper D will close on Sept. 30.  This means the water from little Lava to Crane Prairie is off limits after this month.  There will still be good opportunities to throw dry flies to these brook trout, but don't overlook streamers if you'd like to see a few bigger fish.

The section between Little Lava and CP is awesome and so is the float below Wickiup to Big Bend CG.

Hoppers, PMD's, BWO's, Caddis, Ants, Bead Heads, Streamers and even some outrageous Attractor Dries.

After my luck fishing streamers on the Fall I have been on a bit of a streamer binge, trying my luck in spots where I know big fish live but haven’t been interested in any of my previous offerings. So far I have focused on the Deschutes River through and just above Bend. While I haven’t been able to land one of the big ones that I know are around, its nice to get to know the river closer into town. Even if streamer fishing isn’t your thing some of our more urban water has plenty of opportunities and is a great place to go unwind after work.  Caddis hatches have been coming off pretty consistently during the evenings and an x-caddis with a sparkle pupa dropper has seemed to be the winning combination recently. Most of the fish feeding on the surface seem to be on the smaller size but occasionally you will hook into a nice fish, especially in those last few minutes before dark. If you do want to go chase after the big guys try swinging a heavily weighted streamer pattern into some of the likely looking pools and along cut banks. I have been throwing a silver/white rabbit strip matuka type pattern on a sink tip and giving it a fairly fast retrieve but any large streamer should do the trick as long as you can get it down to where the fish are holding.

While it might not compare to some of the more famous rivers and lakes in the area, its hard to complain when your fishing only 20 minutes after getting off work.

The Upper River above Crane Prairie is fishing well, mostly for small Brook Trout. We are also seeing some nicer Brookies and Rainbow's in this stretch too. We are fishing attractor dries and terrestrials along with little bead head nymphs and a tungsten headed streamer called a Rufus.

We have been having tons of fun on the Upper Deschutes, mostly on dries! A Steamer fished along the logs or in the pools can pull some nice fish too.

Seeing good PMD and Caddis hatches and also getting some amazing fishing on attractors.

We've been doing quite a few floats on the Upper D below Wickiup and most days have produced lots of fish, including some browns in the 20 inch range. Fish are coming on Caddis, PMD's, Streamers & Small Nymphs.

On the Headwater stretch above Crane Prairie the hatches have been really good, including Green Drakes. I expect to see Golden Stones in the next couple of weeks. The Little Brookies are active on the surface so it is a fun place to fish for kids and families.

We've been fishing and guiding the Upper and having some great fishing. Green Drakes are hatching in some areas here than on the Metolius at the moment. PMD's and Caddis are also strong with hatches occuring daily. Don't forget your ant patterns on the Upper river and bring some good nymphs for non hatch times or try an attractor dry like a Princess Di or Rubber Leg Trude. In some areas streamers are also quite good.

While the Middle and Lower Deschutes went crazy with High Water, they actually lowered the Upper flows to hold water back in the reservoirs for storage so it is in perfect shape now.

FISHING: Good
The upper Deschutes will open soon and some of the biggest brookies are easily fooled early on.  Look to undercut banks and any deep water structure to hold the largest fish.  Try a fast sinking nymph or bugger to get down quick into those tight spots.

Closed for the season. what a great year on this small stretch of the Deschutes. Small trout but there sure are lots of them.

Another good place for a Hopper/Dropper. Many of the fish taken will be on the small trailer nymph. Try a Lightning Bug or Psycho Prince.

Attractor Dries are always a good bet here, and a skittered pattern is often very enticing.

Have you ever tried stripping a Girdle Bug here? Pretty good....
