Grande Ronde River - January 1st, 2008

FISHING: Fair
When the water is in shape and temps haven't turned the river into a slushy mess, steelhead are still viable. I can't stress enough how important water levels are here. This time of year, the river can be really low which keeps steelies from entering the river in large numbers and tends to keep fish already in the river stationary. Sooo, keep an eye on river levels... the perfect time would be just after some rain when the river is just getting back into shape. Swinging flies tends to be more productive than nymphing.
FLIES: Standard steelie flies. Deschutes flies work well here.

When the water is in shape and temps haven't turned the river into a slushy mess, folks have been consistently hooking 4 - 6 steelies PER DAY ! Yes people, that is the honest truth.I can't stress enough how important water levels are here. This time of year, the river can be really low which keeps steelies from entering the river in large numbers and tends to keep fish already in the river stationary. Sooo, keep an eye on river levels... the perfect time would be just after some rain when the river is just getting back into shape. Swinging flies tends to be more productive than nymphing.

Steelhead numbers have been a little low, consequently, fishing has yet to really take off on the Ronde. However, folks are averaging 1 or 2 fish a day, not bad for steelhead fishing but a little low for the Ronde. I can't stress enough how important water levels are here. This time of year, the river can be really low which keeps steelies from entering the river in large numbers and tends to keep fish already in the river stationary. Sooo, keep an eye on river levels... the perfect time would be just after some rain when the river is just getting back into shape. Swinging flies tends to be more productive than nymphing.
THIS WEEKS RAINS WILL PROBABLY MOVE MORE FISH INTO THE RIVER, GET OUT THERE !!

Recent rains have really helped the Steelhead fishing here. Fish are moving up the Ronde now and have been picked up with more regularity. It's worth the trip out east. Fishing here is really water flow dependant. Look for the best chances after a rain, when the river is dropping back into shape. On sunny, warmer days, try skating flies -- it's a blast.

Went for our annual trip to the Grande Ronde River over the last ten days of October. Water conditions were the same as last year at a low 600cfs just before our trip, but the steelhead gods were smiling on us and the river jumped to 1200cfs two days before we left. By the time we arrived the water had dropped back to around 800cfs and had about two feet of visibility. On the first day of fishing the water had cleared to four feet of visibility and the temperature was in the low 50’s. For the most part the weather was sunny and in the 60’s. We did have a little overcast and light rain on two of the days, which is a steelheaders perfect day! Our hopes were that with the spike in water it would push some fish into the upper river (though it may take a few days for them to get there). We stayed in Troy and fished the water on the Washington and Oregon side. The fishing was slow for the first couple days with only three hook ups and two fish landed. We covered most of the usual spots and it just seemed that there weren’t as many fish around as we would have hoped. The angling pressure wasn’t to bad during the week, but increased dramatically over the weekend. Even though there was more pressure on the weekend, the number of fish seemed to increase and our daily catch rate went up. After the weekend, there were very few people on the water and the fishing just got better. The fishing is always good; it’s just that the catching gets better! Besides your fishing in a beautiful rugged canyon with big horn sheep, wild turkeys, deer, and bald eagles always part of the landscape. As usual, I hated to leave.
We caught fish on a number of different patterns but leach patterns on a sink tip seemed to be the ticket. I fished my SAGE 7136-4 Z-AXIS for the first week of the trip. And then made a refreshing switch to my lighter SAGE 6126 and fell in love with it all over again! It’s so fun fishing and catching fish on a lighter rod but anytime the wind came up or I needed to reach out there, I went to the 7136.
I'm off for a 3 day float on the Lower Deschutes River. Tight lines!

Recent rains have really helped the Steelhead fishing here. Fish are moving up the Ronde now. Fish have been picked up with more regularity than even a week ago. You may give it a couple of days to let the storm surge pass... then hit it!! It should be dynamite for the next week!

Fished the Grande Ronde River the last 10 days of October, and have been playing catch-up all this week for the days off. But I finally have a chance to post a report on our annual trip to the beautiful Grande Ronde River.
The river was in great shape and running at 760cfs when we arrived and slowly dropped to 700cfs by the end of our stay. The weather was great, (maybe not the best for steelheading) but you’ve got to love warm sunny days at the end of October.
We found the fishing to be unusually slow for this time of year, as did most of the anglers we talked to. On the first morning, I landed a fish in the first run and can remember thinking to myself as I released a beautiful chrome wild fish, that this was the start of another trip full of multi-fish days. As I walked back to the truck, my fishing partner was talking to another angler who had been fishing for two weeks and had only caught one fish. At that point in my mind I recanted my multi-fish day thought and thanked the steelhead gods for the privilege of catching one of his finest. I did land another fish that day and we hooked about 10 more fish throughout our stay, but I had three days where I never touched a fish.
Most our fish were taken on the same marabou spey fly with a stinger hook that I have been fishing on the North Umpqua and Deschutes rivers, and fished on a sink tip line.
The Grande Ronde jumped up to 6800cfs with the rain that passed through this week, and has already started dropping (currently 2670cfs). This increase in flow should move fish up the river, so as long as the weather holds out the fishing should be getting much better.
If haven’t been there the Grande Ronde River, it’s BIG beautiful county. The river runs from Oregon into Washington and dumps into the Snake River. It flows through a huge winding canyon with walls a thousand feet high, and filled with Big Horn Sheep, Deer, Elk, Turkeys and Bald Eagles as well as our beloved Steelhead.
