Metolius River - September 3rd, 2010
supplied by: John Judy Flyfishing
RECORDED:
85 °
FISHING: Great
Trout: Sept and Oct is one of my favorite times on the Metolius. After Labor Day weekend the crowds dissipate. Some folks go hunting, other head to the Deschutes to chase steelhead. Only a handful of die hards are left to pester the trout on the old Metolius.
There is good fishing throughout the system. The upper river (above Gorge Campground) will be dominated by smaller insects. There are good mayfly hatches in the afternoon, small grays, small yellow olives. Spinner falls occur in the morning. One friend swears by the Rusty Spinner at that time of day. My favorite fly is a little bit of a sleeper. Mixed among the mayflies will be the Little Brown Stonefly. This insect is so small (size #16) it is often mistaken for a caddis. Don’t let the size fool you. The Tiny Brown Stone is definitely a preferred food item. It has major attractive power in a mixed hatch.
If you are fishing further downstream, in the Canyon, near the Hatchery or at Bridge 99 and below. In the morning look for Willow Flies. This is a large and very unusual stonefly. Closely related to Golden Stones these bugs are tanish on the belly with blue black on the sides and wings. The egg mass (if present) will be neon purple. It is my theory that these bugs may run out on the water at night to oviposit their eggs. Fish are really keyed on them early in the day.
In the afternoon look for Fall Green Drakes. These insects are slightly smaller than spring Drakes. Happily the effect on the fish is not diminished at all.
Also don’t over look the Tiny Brown Stones mentioned earlier. These bugs are present in both the upper and lower river. Sometimes they can be locally important.
Bull Trout: Fishing in the early part of Sept will likely be slow. Most of the fish are still up in the tributaries spawning. When they come out in mid Sept. fasten your seat belts – they will be hungry and feeding ravenously to regain strength. The Bull Trout post spawn period offers some of the best fishing of the year. It coincides with the arrival of Koknaee; these little landlocked Sockeye Salmon make a wonderful food source for the hungry Bulls. During Sept and Oct in the lower river, you will often find Bull Trout lurking near Kokanee spawning areas. A traditional white “flesh fly” will be a powerful attractor. This combination creates some outstanding sight fishing for larger fish.

FISHING: Great
Get out there while the weather is nice
I took a day off the Deschutes River and I headed over to the Metoluis River to do a fly fishing which ended up being a great move. The weather finally shaped up and I could not of asked for a better day, a lot of sun and a not a touch of wind.
The fishing was good, there was a good to great caddis hatch going, not a lot of fish eating feeding on the surface but the nymphing was well worth it. I hooked plenty of white fish, a bull trout or two and some of the biggest rainbows that I have ever hooked over there.
As long as the weather stay nice like this the fishing should continue to be good. Those fish over there seem to be just like us this time of year, when it gets sunny and warm they like it as much or more than we do and they seem to be a lot more active.
All in all it was the best day of fishing that I've had all year. Get out there while the weather is nice and it sounds like it should be unbelievable, through tuesday.

FISHING: Good
A change of scerey
I decided to check out the Metolius today instead of going to the Lower Deschutes River.
It was plenty cold out there this morning, but I bet it got into the mid 40's in the afternoon. With these cold nights there is no reason to get out there to early, there wasn't much going on until around noon today. About noon some big caddis came off and then about 1:45 the blue wings started going.
I got a few fish to look at a dry fly but it was mainly nymphing. The Metolius is probably my favorite river to nymph because you never know what your going to catch. Today I hooked a whitefish, rainbow and bull trout in one spot today.
For the Metolius keep your eyes on the weather, this time of year it seems like if you get a couple days or more in a row of sunny weather the fishing seems to be a fair bit better.
I will have another report for the deschutes in the next couple of days.
Good luck out there

Metolius River - August 29th, 2007
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
FISHING: Great
The Metolius is a great place to fish on hot days, this spring fed river stays around 47-52 degrees year round and it fishes like a spring creek! Averaging 1-3 fish an hour is the norm. Have patience... it takes quality time on the water to get a feel for this river's complex character. Patience will eventually lead to fishing success. This is a stalking trout stream, casting from your knees and from behind bushes to hide yourself from fish will help out--alot. Wading often spooks fish, if you can hit the spot without getting in the river, you are already ahead of the game. GOLDEN STONES are active in the Camp Sherman area. The stone hatch on the Met is very different than the Deschutes. This is a long, drawn out hatch that will last pretty much until nighttime air temps are near freezing again. You generally don't see huge clouds of goldens but they linger around in large enough numers to keep the fish's attention. Goldens are mostly an opprotunity meal and fish can move on and off them on a whim. However, the area around Camp Sherman provides plenty of opprotunity. Keep in mind that only about 1 out of 10 stones that emerge are orange salmonflies. PMDs can hatch intermitently throughout the afternoon and evening. Mayfly spinners at dark. BWOs hatch on cool, cloudy days and have been hatching in good numbers in the evening. Caddis have been strangely absent in the evening so make sure you have plenty of other flies to offer rising fish. Yellow Sallies and small Green Stone flies are present and the fish can move on and off them too. Bull Trout get sluggish in the summer so concentrate your efforts when the sun is off the water, especially morning. Remember, prime rainbow trout fishing is between noon and dark, sleep in! DRIES: Clark's Stone, x-caddis, spotlight emerger, rusty spinner, CDC Baetis, Henryville. NYMPHS: Moab stone, Triple-Bead Golden, Batman, green rock worm, serendipity, sparkle pupa, October caddis nymph BULL TROUT: the biggest and heaviest streamer you got
