North Umpqua River - February 9th, 2009
supplied by: Deschutes River Outfitters
FISHING: Fair
Coastal Winter Steelhead: Up and down the coast could be summed up easily, we need some rain. Rivers are on the low side. Low water and colder temps can translate to tougher fishing. Not a lot of fish pushing into the systems right now. Those that do have water (Main Stem Umpqua for example), expect to see crowds.
There are some slight showers and rain forecast for this weekend and into next week along most of the coast. This will help a little, but it doesn’t look like we are expecting enough to see the rivers make a big jump. Hopefully the weatherman is wrong. Even a little rain could "wake em up" and get things rolling again.
Low water can be a double edge sword for those pursing winter fish on the fly. Less water makes it easier to get a swung fly down. Cold water temps, and fish sulking in the few “dark green pockets” can translate into fish not super willing to move. You still need to get low, slow and right in the wheelhouse.
Those same low water conditions will push fish into real “nymphy pockets”. Smaller single egg patterns and trouty nymphs can be just the ticket for spooky, skinny water steelhead. These tougher water conditions can be a mixed blessing for fly guys.
This weather pattern could have us set up for a great late season. Once we get the rain, the end of February, March and even later into April could be better than ever. A slow start to a season with skeptical reports just means less pressure later. The fish will show, and everybody will be off doing something else. Hang in there.

Winter Steelhead / North Umpqua: Pretty much wrapped up. Winter fish should on their way to the beds, on the beds, or done spawning and heading back down. Better to let them be and wait for the summers.

North Umpqua River - April 12th, 2008
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
FISHING: Good
Winter run steelies are in the Fly-Only water... head on down !
The fishing has been spotty lately and the river is running high due to all the snow in the Cascades, however, it will only pick up from here. April is usually the peak month for winter run Steelies. Keep an eye on river levels.
Make sure you bring heavy sink tips (Type III, Type 8, and some T-14) as the fish tend to hang tight to the riverbed. The North Umpqua has a confusing array of special regulations so be sure to consult the ODFW regulations are give us a call.
Flies: Winter hope, Green Butt Skunk, A-leaches, Silver Hilton. Oftentimes Deschutes flies work here... but bigger... like size 2 to 2 / 0.

North Umpqua River - February 23rd, 2008
supplied by: The Flyfishers Place
FISHING: Good
I increased the rating to "good" in anticipation of the arrival of the mainly wild run of steelhead that is arriving in the Umpqua system. Fish counts over the dam are at about 200-700 fish so steelies should be moving into the Fly Only water now.
