Fishing the World Renowned Deschutes River
Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop, Inc.

We pride ourselves on offering the most diverse and educational guided trips in the region. With over thirty years experience on the Deschutes River, your guide will help you decipher the river, improve your technique, and increase your effective fishing time.
We specialize in fly fishing strategies for hooking, playing, landing, and releasing wild red side Trout, and spectacular summer steelhead. Your success is our goal. We guide;
You fish. Yours is the only line in the water.

We offer a variety of guided trips so you can choose the services that you want.
A Deschutes River non float trip is a great way to get from one spot to another and be able to approach Trout from a bird’s eye point of view. From Maupin, an access road follows the river for 33 miles, allowing us to pull off at any point, get out of the vehicle, and start stocking fish. This is a great way to study the fish to figure out your best approach before making that all important first cast.

Of course the all time classic guided fly fishing trip on the Deschutes is the drift boat trips. This is a wonderful way to see the river and get into those little nooks and crannies allowing the fly angler to approach fish from the old time favorite, the sneak and creep technique.
Along with our single day services, we also provide wonderful two to four day over night float trips.
We guide the entire river and plan our trip locations to match the current conditions.
Our well stocked and comfortable river side camps place you in the middle of spectacular
scenery and some of the rivers finest fly water.

Quiet seclusion awaits you at our Private Lakes. Wild Winds Guest Ranch is just a short drive from Maupin, providing some of the finest still water fly fishing found anywhere.
Natural springs feed multiple lakes that are full of fast running, high jumping Rainbow
Trout, ranging in size from two to six pounds.
The lakes are carefully managed and monitored to ensure the absolute best environment possible, keeping those hard fighting Trout healthy, abundant, and stress free.

Season:
The Deschutes River is open year round for Red Side Trout and Steelhead from the mouth of the Deschutes 70 miles up stream to the boundary of the Warm Springs Reservation.
From the north boundary of the Warm Springs Reservation up stream to Warm Springs,
(about 30 miles) the Deschutes River is open from the 4th Saturday of April to October 31st for Trout and from April 15th to December 31st for Steelhead.

Water/Weather Conditions:
The Deschutes River is 252 miles long from the head waters to the mouth where it empties into the Columbia River. The lower 100 miles is considered the lower Deschutes which cuts through arid dessert lands, rain shadowed just east of the Cascade Range.
The average rain fall per year is 11 inches in Maupin and surrounding areas.
Winter does produce occasional snow fall, leaving one to four inches behind. Temperatures range in the teens for the lows, to mid forties for the highs, and of course sometimes colder if an Arctic front moves through.
Spring and Fall are usually the most favorable months here, with warm day time temperatures in the 65 to 80 degree range, and delightfully cooler evenings that drop down to 40 to 50 degrees.
Summer brings hot day time highs around 90 to 110 degrees in July and August, with evening lows averaging about 50 to 65 degrees.

Equipment Used:
The fly rods used the most on the Deschutes for Trout are 8 to9 foot in length, in either a 4 to 5wt.line rating. These will work just fine in most situations for dries, wets, and nymphs. Sometimes a 6wt. rod is needed for spring time fishing when the stone flies are out and you need to handle that larger bug in the wind.
For the steelhead you will need a 7 or 8wt. rod in a 9 to 10 foot length for single hand style rods, and a 7 to 8wt. spey rod (two handed) in the 12 to 14 foot length.
We recommend breathable waders and good quality wading shoes with felt/studded soles
for traction and stability. A wading staff is also a real good thing to have.
Of course all the other usual items like a well stocked vest or fishing pack with flies, leaders, spools of tippet, nippers, hook sharpener, forceps and so on.
A good hat to shade your eyes, and high quality polarized sun glasses to cut  the glare, and help you spot the fish.
