Provo River:

We are fortunate to have the Provo River as our home water to guide and fish.  It has long been recognized as one of the leading fisheries in the west as well as the nation.  Its close proximity to Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front affords us a variety of options, especially if your visit or time constraints create limitations.

The Provo, like many of Utah’s waters, is a year round fishery.   From winter’s prolific midge hatches to fall’s delicate blue winged olives there’s a wide assortment of hatches and fly fishing opportunities just about anytime of the year.

There are two sections of the Provo that offer ease of access and great fly fishing. Both sections are home to butter yellow browns and the west’s native trout, the cutthroat.  Of the two the Middle Provo is the closest to our store, yet both can easily be fished in a day with no or little interruptions in your fishing time.

Middle Provo River:

The Middle is home to the west’s famous Green Drake.  This significant hatch is just one of many great hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, midges and stoneflies that this river yields throughout the year.  These hatches begin with February’s clustering midges and end with October’s mayflies and streamers.

From its origins below Jordanelle Dam to its end in Deer Creek Reservoir the Middle Provo meanders and flows through 13 miles of rural farmlands.  Entering the river, you will be immersed in the rivers sights, smells and sounds, overshadowed by towering snowcapped mountains that hold the key to this water’s prolific nature.

Lower Provo River:

As the Middle Provo ends the Lower Provo begins.  From the depths of Deer Creek Reservoir this section flows cold and abundant in aquatic life.  The fertile pasture lands of the valley soon give way to canyon walls laced with scrub oak, big tooth maples and trembling groves of aspen.

Although hatches are prolific here, they aren’t as diverse as those found on the Middle.  A steady diet of sow bugs and scuds provide rich sustenance to the river’s resident browns, rainbows, and cutthroat.  Hatches of midges, caddis flies, and mayflies only add to the variety of fly fishing prospects that abound on the Lower Provo.

Between these two distinct fisheries there lies a tremendous variety in waters types, insects and fly fishing scenarios.  Given its close proximity to Salt Lake City and the caliber of fishing it affords there are few fisheries in the country that will rival the experience and convenience you will enjoy on the Provo River.

Small Streams:

If something a little more adventurous and distant is more to your liking, there are a number of streams that we guide that offer an excellent alternative to the Provo River. Northern Utah has a variety of quality fisheries just far enough away to leave those with time constraints behind.   These handfuls of scenic and fertile waters are off the beaten path, diverse in the habitats and exemplarily in offerings.

Thankfully, these waters are not as well known as several of our other states fisheries.  Yet given their character, size and quality they rival or excel in the type of fly fishing experience you will encounter.  Especially when you stumble upon some of the west’s renowned  hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies tumbling down one of these waters many broken currents.

These gems in the rough accentuate that which we have to offer in the Northern portions of Utah.  Between these and the Provo there are limitless options that one can fish just a short venture from our front door.

Green River:

We have saved the best for last, the Green River.  In western fly-fishing history, the Green is just a new born.  Yet its status now rivals those famous waters of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

Towering red walls of sandstone stand guardian over the Green’s clear currents and cornucopia of trout.  Brown, cut-bows, cutthroat and rainbow trout abound.  Although aquatic hatches are limited when compared to many of Utah’s other prolific waters, the famous Cicada combined with a handful of other land based terrestrials provides incredibly consistent dry fly fishing throughout most of the year.

That being said the summer months aren’t the only time when fly fishing on the Green is good.  February’s midge hatches are just the beginning of a season that will fish well into October.  Midge clusters produce pods of sipping trout eager to take advantage of winters first offerings.  Blue wing olives soon follow and will taper off just in time to accommodate the delectable terrestrials of summer most notable of these the Green River Cicada.    Summers passing yields to the quieter season of fall when blue wing olives again appear creating the years final dry fly opportunities.

We are only one of a handful of outfitters permitted to guide the Green River.  For your convenience and efficiency we use river dories to safely transport anglers through this incredibly scenic and prolific fishery.  To maintain that personal level of service we feel is necessary to make your day a success we run a small staff of guides.  Therefore, particularly during peak season; April 15-July15, we urge you to book early.
